gotta brag… I used Liss’ grocery guide for the first time. looked at it before, but none of the items were what I needed.

today, I decided to toss my original plans and use the guide and printed the grocery list (thanks to Liss, I now have a printer!!! woo hoo!). it wasn’t a big list, but it had the basic things that I needed and the rest I could just look for the best bargain;-) the big ticket item on the list was the 10 lb chicken quarters for 69 cents (ya’ll have seen my chicken menus!

LOL!). as usual, I checked the mark-down bin…it was kinda lean because I went shopping so late (had a rough night, but that’s another story). however, I got a lovely sirloin steak for $1.73, a pound of cod fillets for $1.74, and a 6.25 lb roasting hen for $2.31!

so look for next week’s menus to see what I come up with;-)
I guess this shoulda been a blog, but I wanted ya’ll to read what a valuable tool that Liss has created. I went over budget, but the freezer is packed (I did have stuff in there before the trip), the cabinets are packed-packed! LOL!

plus, I wanted everyone to know the importance of really scrutinizing the mark-down bins. yes, I’ll hit the store next week, but only for fresh items. the apples that were on sale (I bought seven pounds) will go in the dehydrator for decroative, aromatic gift additions and for snacking, camping mix, or baking.
so thanks Liss for all that you do for us!!!

I was so excited I ran over to try the grocery guide again. I tried both stores in my 90 mile radius area (Hy-Vee & Walmart) but all they had listed was baby stuff and booze and sugar/candy stuff. I only buy real food, meat and dairy stuff so was disappointed.

Guess that’s what we get for living in the Sticks.

I just tried my son’s zip and I’ll have to show this to him because his stores had all kinds of goodies! But of course he lives in the big city not the sticks like I do! I can’t eat Walmart meat anyway and I’m content going once a month or two to shopping at the commissary and getting decent meat if I have to buy it.

Great prices on dairy stuff too! But my son will love this guide to use!

woo hoo! get him going on spending his money wisely (not that you haven’t already…just don’t let him fall off the wagon);-) I speak from experience;- there was a time when I made lots of money and didn’t have to worry about the price of things. I still bought on sale, but if I had a taste for something or if I saw something that I wanted (but didn’t actually need), the cost wasn’t a problem.

so I got away from the frugal (and smart) lifestyle;-| i think back about how foolish (and arrogant) i behaved and all the money i could have been saving and investing…sigh. but live and learn! lol!

keep checking that grocery guide each week because some weeks are better than others as i, too, have learned! lol!

That’s awesome! (I’m late, missed the post originally, sorry about that!) I haven’t been shopping at food lion lately, but I need to get back to it. I have this habit of stocking up the freezer and then not shopping at all for weeks on end, which means that I end up not looking for deals (or posting them, for that matter!).

I’ll see if I can find some new ones for Food Lion & Piggly… I’m thrilled to hear that you gals are getting such great deals! multistars smilie
