Cell phone for a 10 yr old???

I have to disagree with the thought that no preteen needs a cell phone. Our son turned 11 in May and that is exactly what we got him for his birthday. There are no bells and whistles, its added on to our cell phone so like others is 9.99.

We told him no texting at this time. Why does he need it—we have three children, all in sports spring and fall. Since he is the oldest we often drop him off at practice so we can go to practice with the two younger ones.

IF for some reason he needed to get home, he can call. Yes, usually the coach has a cell phone but if all 12 players need to call home, thats a long wait for all those kids to be picked up. And if the coach has an emergency and has to leave immediately???

All our practices are in places without payphones. In fact I don’t think I have seen a pay phone in forever. In addition, I worked in the afternoons and my son was in charge of the two younger ones,
getting them from the bus stop to our house.

Not a long distance but if the power had gone out or he couldn’t find the key to get in, they wouldn’t have to worry about a neighbor being home (we don’t have many neighbors as we live in the country). My son is extremely responsible so it wouldn’t work for all kids. He knows that its a priviledge and that it can be taken away but for us its a necessity.
