First, some questions. What does your 10 yr. old need with a cell
phone? Who would she be calling? Would you be paying the bill or her?
I’m guessing you! Are you ready for all the added expense this is goingto put on your budget?
This is just my opinion, and a strong one, but peer pressure can work
two ways. If it is for the good of your DD fine, otherwise don’t fallfor it. I have 7 kids (combined family), mostly sons, 2 daughters ages
32 thru 15. In our house the rule was, when you get a job and pay for
it yourself, you can have it. This went for cars/insurance/main. oncar/gas as well. And yes, we have spoiled our kids in other ways LOL. I
can’t tell you how many mins. the older boys put on their 1st cell
phones to get the $400 bill they received, that took them months to payoff. I can’t tell you how many times they have changed cell phone
companies because their phones were shut-off because they owed money
(this includes sons and daughters to this day). Daughters seem to loosethe phones more than sons as well, but I guess this depends on the kid.
are you see $$$ signs? and yes, some of this happened when cell phones
were new some years back, but even with the family plans i can’t seehow much things have changed. any place your daughter would be should
have a phone she could use(school, church, friends, etc…). and if all
her friends have cell phones they could let her use theirs and thenexplain to their parents why their bill is so high or they are over on
their mins. my 17 and 15 yr. old sons (2007-08, senior/soph.
in hs)still don’t have cell phones! if they have someplace to go for school
we will sometimes give them ours to use for that time only. have found
they take pics with camera and text message, which are services wedon’t have or use. no surprise there, right!
does your daugther have or get an allowance for doing chores around the
house/yard? we don’t do allowance. the kids have chores they get paidfor like mowing the yard, shoveling snow, etc… not cleaning their
rooms or doing their laundry (started doing their own at 12),( you mess
it up, you clean it or live in it). They also have odd jobs fromneighbors for which they get paid. We have tried to teach them that 2/3
goes in the bank and 1/3 is theirs to do with as they wish. If they
have a big ticket item they want (computer game, whatever), they needto save their 1/3 of the money. And yes, we will give in at times if
they have been saving for a long time and are close to their goal. We
pay for school lunches, but only a few time a year (try to do once amonth), otherwise it’s brown bag lunches even for hubby. I guess the
question here would be, is there someway your daughter earns money
where she could help pay for her cell phone? it’s not a right to have acell phone , it’s a privilege! it’s should be earned.
just my thoughts on the subjects of cell phones and allowance.
