Don’t feel bad. My son (11) started asking for one last year. I told
him no several times and just keep telling him NO! My reasoning for
this is that he’s never all that far away from me. When he runs around
town playing with his friends he has to take a walkie talkie with him.
It has a ring just like a cell phone that I can get his attention with
and if he’s somewhere that he doesn’t want others to hear the
conversation he just steps out for a minute.
I would say that you have to look at your situation. Is she away from
you often? Would it be beneficial for you to help keep tabs on her?
Can you trust her with one? Will she run up the bill? Text until her
fingers fall off? Can she pay for it herself like with allowance or
something? I think you need to make a list of all the pros and cons of
this… I won’t get either of my kids one until their Father and I feel
that they need one for us to keep in touch. It’s kind of like a car.
If they can’t take care of it and are going to abuse it, then they
don’t need it yet. Peer pressure is not a reason to get her one… if
my kids need a phone we have a land line for their chit chat.

Does your child have a cell phone? What made you buy them one?
