Some beef dresses out
(this is after the butchering and the gutting, but before the cutting up) at 200
lbs and others at 600 lbs. I think the largest beef I have ever seen dressed
out at 675 lbs. It just depends on the bred of the critter and how old it was
(yearlings or two year olds are smaller than 4 or 5 year olds, steers are larger
than cows).
If there is a question about whether or not your freezer will hold it, you can
still make a savings by purchasing the 4H beef, having it butchered, then
sharing the beef and the cost with family or friends. If you have to share it
with several friends! It will still be cheaper than buying beef at the store.
