waffle iron cinnamon rolls

Waffle Iron Cinnamon Rolls

Just the thought of hot, gooey, sticky cinnamon rolls on a Sunday morning gets my mouth watering. Here’s a way that you can turn that weekend treat into a weekday grab-n-go breakfast, a lunchbox treat, after-school snack, or for that late night sweet tooth.

Waffle irons aren’t just for waffles anymore….. There is a whole host of things you can do with them. This idea has quickly highly requested family favorite. The whole family will love this fun twist on the traditional cinnamon roll favorite. Dig out that waffle iron you may have forgotten you owned, dust it off, and get it heated up.

Waffle Iron Cinnamon Rolls

You’ll Need:
1 or 2 packages of refrigerated cinnamon rolls
Nonstick cooking spray
Waffle iron

Just pop the top on your favorite brand of refrigerated cinnamon rolls and you are ready to go.

The icing is included. If you are the type that likes to make cinnamon roll dough from scratch you certainly could use it here; but I find the refrigerated kind to be oh so much easier for a spur of the moment treat.

Once the waffle iron is heated up give it a light once over with nonstick cooking spray. Depending on the size and type of waffle iron you have you will be able to cook 2-4 at a time. Start with 2 and see how they spread. They are easily broken apart after baking but you may end up with too much dough for your waffle iron to handle if you stuff it too full. I recommend placing 2 cinnamon rolls down to start off with, then adjust from there.

Place them equal distance apart and gently close the lid. Hold the lid in place for a few seconds while the dough spreads out.

Cook for 3 minutes or until lightly browned. Transfer to a cooling rack or a plate. Using a knife, spread the icing that came in the package onto the warm cinnamon rolls. By using the knife to spread the icing you are sure to get just the right amount on each cinnamon roll. These have a different texture than cinnamon rolls but not quite waffle-like.

These are so yummy when hot, straight off the waffle iron. If you can keep your family away from them, store in individual plastic bags in the refrigerator when cooled. These can also be flash frozen on a cookie sheet then placed in a gallon freezer bag for storing in the freezer. It only takes a few seconds to reheat in the microwave or if you prefer, use the toaster oven.

My kids seem to love them cold right out of the fridge. They are much less gooey so they are easier to eat on those days where you grab something and rush out the door. They also make a great lunchbox treat or a late night snack. Have one on the way to work, or save it for that morning coffee break. The kids love having them tucked away in their lunch boxes for a surprise.

I have found that 1 package of the icing will cover 2 packages of cinnamon rolls. Just store the other package of icing in your freezer for later use.

Congratulations to Nicole for being Spotlighted on the Rachel Ray Show February 5th!
