A few days ago, one of my kids decided to hang decorations from his light fixture in his room, only to break the bulb off trying to remove it.

Since the metal part was still (very securely) in the outlet, here's how I got it out.

1. Cut the power to his Room (the light switch in particular!)
2. Cut a potato in half
3. While wearing gloves, insert the potato into the broken lightbulb until it felt fairly "secure"
4. Unscrew the lightbulb.
5. Dry the socket with a clean dry cloth, insert new lightbulb.

Dispose of the potato and broken bulb and snapped the power back on. Voila, instant dirt cheap fix, no electrician required.
