Advice on Children's Allowances
I am looking for some advice on giving children allowances. My daughter is
almost 8 and thinks that ATM machines just *GIVE* you money and that food is
*FREE* if you get it at the drive thru. Quite disturbing! We obviously
need to teach her how money works in addition to the value of a dollar!!
So, I was wondering how other families handle allowances with kids this age.
I don't want to spoil her, but I want to give her enough so that she has
some money to "manage". How much would you suggest? Would you tie it in to
chores? What has worked for your families?

I am a foster parent and the state tells us to give children 10 and under 10
bucks a month. Children over 10 get 15 bucks a month. We are not allowed to say
this is for chores, but we can take away some of the money if behavior or school
work is not @ the right level that you have agreed on.

I would definitely tie it to the chores. Thats the only way a kid learns that
money doesn't come free. A friend of mine came up w/a wonderful idea...sure
she heard it from somebody else but I heard it from her...LOL Anyway, she
would set an amount her child/children would earn say a week and they would
have chores that would need to be done in order to earn that money. Stuff like
taking their dishes from the dinner table was NOT a chore, THAT was part of
being a family. Anyway, each chore was assigned a monetary value and if that
chore was not completed PROPERLY that set amount of money would be deducted
from their total allowence. She said in the beginning there were a couple
weeks where she didn't have to give out any allowence but they soon learned and
now she gives out full allowences on a regular basis....

I give my son $2 a week he is 8. He can earn $1 more by behavior in school
and doing chores around the house. It is good for them to not have their
allowance tied to chores, then they can earn extra $$$ by doing chores or
being good. Chores are not doings some dishes, making your bed or folding
clothes they are above and beyond normal chores, like washing a car,
weeding a garden, etc.
