    Default Bean Soup

this is so good to come home to when the weather turns chilly and a good way to use leftover ham or pork...
    Bean Soup
1 bag of your favorite dry beans
    8 cups water
    2 15-oz can tomato sauce
    salt and pepper to taste
    4 potatoes, diced
    4 carrots, shredded
    2 onions, diced

1 cup ham or pork, diced
Soak beans overnight in enough water to cover as they swell. Drain beans. Put all ingredients in crockpot. Stir well. Cover and cook on low 8 to 10 hours.
note: diced bacon, about 8 slices, can be used; leftover sausages, sliced works well, too!

I think Great Northern Beans, Pinto Beans, Cranberry Beans, or maybe Black Beans would be really good choices for this delicious sounding dish. I would think Kidney Beans would do nicely also.

I've never met a bean that I didn't like. I've made this with every bean that's out there -- black to speckled, and I've even used the bag of 15-bean soup mix when I couldn't make up my mind...giggle... It'll time to make a batch of this really soon as the nights are already turning chilly.

Oh, and I've got a bag of 13 or 15 bean soup and a lonely ham bone hiding somewhere in the freezer...Yep, sounds like that's gonna be dinner pretty soon since it's getting much cooler at night now.

What is a Cranberry Bean? Haven't heard of it before. Can you get them in Alabama?

    They're definitely available in Alabama.
In my little area of North Alabama, not many stores carry them, but a few do.
They taste almost like a pinto bean, with just a little variance.
My MIL couldn't tell the difference, but I can.
They look like a pinto bean also, just has a pink tint to them.

I have never met a bean that I didn't like...giggle... I have a 'dump' bean recipe going in the crockpot right now. I made it up as I threw it together, soooo-oo I'll let you know how it turns out. If it is good, I'll post it in the dump recipes forum...if not so good...well...we'll just skip it! ...giggle...
