Default Inexpensive Desk - we LOVE ours

    Inexpensive Desk
Make a great desk top out of an old smooth door
(knobs removed). Use short filing cabinets or milk crates to
    support the door.

If you use 2-drawer file cabinets for hanging files, get an
under-slung keyboard drawer and screw it under the door,
especially if you are of average or shorter size. On top of
the door, the keyboard will be too high for fast and
    comfortable typing.

The best cover for unfinished interior doors, used as
desktops, is marine spar varnish. Coffee does not bother

it one bit, and it works well both with a ball or optical
    mouse.

Hubby's Grandfather made this and made a drawer for the middle too.
We got it when he passed away and cherish it and our memories of a
    thrifty and handy Quaker gentleman.

Another idea is to use smooth fiberglass for the top. I found my piece in a
grab table bin at the building supplies store and only had to sand down the
edges to round them off. Wipes clean.
