need help with my weight and high cholesterol

I received a call from my Dr. that my cholesterol is 222 and I need to be put on meds. I don't completely trust medical field so I would like to ask for your opinion. I know that if I cut on eating out 3x a week that would help. I do most of the cooking from scratch but I still have areas I need to

Oatmeal is supposed to be really good for helping to lower

cholesterol when eaten daily. Cheerio's, too.

Other than that, just cut back on the bad types of food, and try to

eat healthier. You don't need Weight Watchers to tell you that an

apple is a better snack than a bag of chips, right? Try to get more

fresh foods into your diet, and change your meals around to be

healthier. Substitute whole milk for fat free when cooking. Use low

fat or fat free margarine to put on things and in recipes.

Cut back on grease, basically. Lean meats are better for you. Bake

items instead of frying them. Keep fresh fruits & veggies you like

and will eat in the house. If a snack item you shouldn't eat is in

the house, you are more likly to eat it, right? So don't buy it at

    the store.

Take walks every day after dinner. Even 2 blocks is better than

sitting down to watch TV after dinner. After a while, you'll notice

you can go 3 blocks, then 4. Don't push yourself to do it hard. Just

ease into it. You could also try doing this during your lunch hour

    at work, too.

Cut sugary drinks from your diet- soda, juice, kool-aid, etc. Drink

water, and tea's (green tea IS good for helping you out). Not only

is the sugar bad for you, but caffein in larger doses actually

    inhibits weight loss.

You mention cutting eating out 3x a week to help, but it makes it

sound like you eat out more than that? Eating out isn't neccessarily

bad on your body. There are MANY healthy alternatives to grabbing a

steak or a burger. Most fast food places have lots of salad options.

McDonalds offers juice and tea to drink, as well as bottled water.

Most have fresh fruit available now, too.

Arby's has fantastic kids meals that are filling enough for an adult

(and cheaper!). They have a regular sandwich (turkey & ham, for

instance), fresh fruit cups, and your choice of milk or juice.

I found two things drastically lowered my cholesterol when I tested. Eating out really only has about three things to keep in mind. One just because it looks healthy doesn't mean it is. Two decide where to eat, Wendy's has less fat for most of their foods than Mc Donalds. You can research them online just go their websites. And three, just eat smaller portions, skip the fries or only get a small one. And the big key eat SLOWLY with lots of water. This allows your brain to let you know your full and the water helps your body process all that extra stuff. If you drink lots of soda try to cut back. I try to drink one bottle of water before I ever pick up a soda. I usually have water with my meals and have a soda for that afternoon slump around 2-4pm. The second thing that really helped was making sure I had cereal or oatmeal for breakfast. You can also do protein drinks or something similar, but don't skip breakfast. It causes your body to store more during the day including significantly more fat which is where cholesterol is stored. Definately eating at home is more healthy as long as you don't deep fry or use lots of butter. But really just go for a walk more often, eat small frequent meals, eat slowly, and drink more water. Diets never really work just cut what you know you can stick with. For me I don't eat at McDonalds any more, I eat at Wendy's if I eat out (its cheaper too). I also love Subway, Italian fastfood, and Mexican. Just get use to ordering a small fries and eat them after the main meal so you don't get the urge to eat the whole thing. Baked potatos (microwave them on a plate covered with plastic for 12 min) are a great quick meal when you are craving eating out. Tea is also a good soda substitute because it is primarily water without all the chemicals. If I go out to dinner I usually order tea instead of water because I like flavor. Drink milk if you can at least with one meal a day. Dairy for some reason actually helps your body think it is getting enough fat that it doesn't need to store as much. Pretty much you get into trouble when you try to cut fat out all together. Change your cooking oils to olive or canola. I use the spray stuff if I am making quick stuff and the olive if I am cooking on the stove top. These will raise your good cholesterol. Hope this helps. Ask your doctor to give you 30 days to adjust your diet and lifestyle a little and get retested before letting them put you on meds. Otherwise they will say the medicine is what caused the significant change. My went down to 170's just by diet and walking alone. You got to let your body know you are going to take care of it and it doesn''t need to store all the junk it thinks it needs. -Jessica

If you need a buddy there are several online sites ... well more than several but a few are Dr.Phil.com (you search the message boards for your state/town and see if there is anyone http://www.exercisefriends.com/ And then meetup.com sometimes will have an exercise group for your area. If you cant find anyone in your area, you can always just find an online site with people that are truely motivated to lose weight and they can be sorta penpals to help motivate you. I havent found such a site yet but working on it. ~Mitzi

Make sure that you are getting enough protein in your diet in

proportion to carbohydrates. Try to cut back on carbs and drink more

water. Make sure that you take supplements, and if possible eat much

smaller meals more frequently. Also, I would suggest checking out

this website http://www.lindora.com. You may be able to get their

book at a discounted rate on half.com. But I would at minimum buy the

    book and follow the diet.

    Melissa,

I never had high cholesterol, but I have found out what it was

through donating blood. The first time I donated my cholesterol was

    150. The next time I donated (8 months later) I was at 125. I

started walking to help me lose weight. I lost some weight and my

    cholesterol was lowered.

Do you have kids? Is your hubby overweight? Don't know what part of

the country you are in but have your leaves started to change or are

they already off the trees? If they have started to change, go for a

family walk to see the leaves around your block.

Do you have a friend who walks or worksout a lot? Ask him/her to be

your "trainer." My husband did this and he has lost 4% body fat and

20 lbs in about 2 months (working out on the Bowflex Revolution).

Oatmeal, Cheerios, and Smart Start are also good at helping remove

    cholesterol.

    Hope this helps! Good Luck!

    Kelly

A great online site that is absolutely FREE is

www.sparkpeople.com. You might want to check it out. They have a

lot of great resources available. I know I have seen articles there

on cholesterol. Sparkpeople, in my opinion, is the best online

    weight loss site available.
