Every family has their own way of storing, to be certain. This may sound crazy no doubt, but I plan 52 main meals and rotate them 7 times each year. Why? Just me...a variety type of eating appeals best to us. And interestingly enough, our pantry and storage is made up mostly of basic

    Default Planning Ahead and what we keep on hand


    Every family has their own way of storing, to be certain. This may
    sound crazy no doubt, but I plan 52 main meals and rotate them 7
    times each year. Why? Just me...a variety type of eating appeals
    best to us. And interestingly enough, our pantry and storage is made
    up mostly of basic foods. We have a grain grinder that will also grind
    beans. We try to not waste anything, since we spent hard-earned
    money on it. I make our own whole wheat bread, tortillas, buns, rolls,
    etc. This alone saves so much money, and tastes better too.


    Wheat, quick oats, rice, brown rice, whole dry corn
    for grinding cornmeal, rye, pearled barley, millet

    Unbleached flour, pasta (not a lot because I make my
    own, usually noodles), yeast, Rumford's baking powder,
    baking soda, sea salt, sugar, honey, molasses, olive oil,
    cooking oil, butter

    Dry beans: black, pinto, baby limas, red, navy, kidneys,
    garbanzo, split peas, great northern, brown lentils, red
    lentils, black-eyed peas

    Dry milk, dry parmesan, cheddar cheese, eggs, Nuts,
    seeds for sprouting, coconut, peanut butter, cocoa
    powder, chocolate chips

    Home bottled jams, jellies, fruit butters, pie fillings


    Frozen meats/fish, and home bottled meats/fish; also
    we make wonderful deer jerky from my husband's recipe

    Frozen, canned, dried, home bottled vegetables and
    fruits. We use a lot of tomatoes and tomato sauce, so
    we have canned, bottled, and dried. Quite a bit of the
    food we preserve is from a garden.

    Lots and lots of herbs, spices, flavorings, etc. to help
    give the basics the variety we like

    I no longer store oats but I store oat groats and roll my own oats for oat meal and other things. I got a Norpro GRAIN GRINDER / OAT ROLLER MILL and rolls my oat groats out wonderfully. I also make my white flour substitute out of whole grains. I use equal amounts of oat groats, barley and brown rice. No one knows they are not eating white flour. I had a real problem with my flour going rancid with in one year and also wanted to switch to whole grains. We also went to a menu based food storage so we know exactly what to store for one years worth of food and we live in this plan full time. We are also learning about natural plants that grow in our area. We have learned which ones are eatable and which ones can help with health issues. I'm also teaching free classes in my area so my neighbors know about storing what they need for times of disaster.

    With the way things are going I think everyone needs to have a stockpile of at least 3 months. Our goal is one year because of job situation.

    Yes having at least a 3 month supply is a must now and a 1 year supply will be a great help. So many things are coming into play.

    Crop shortages, there are no peanuts available on the open market so peanut butter will go up in a big way. Grain prices have tripled this year so anything which is just about everything will be going up.

    Loss of jobs. So many are losing their jobs. I know because 4 out of my 5 adult children have moved back home after losing their jobs. Having food to cover you during this time is one less thing to worry about. Take a good look at how you are trained. Do you need to improve yourself to be better employable? Now is the time to get the training you might need.

    Our nations economy. The USA is head over heels in debt and they have to make some big changes. These changes will be painful and most congress persons aren't willing to do the cutting. If they don't this nation will fail. If we fail heaven help you if you don't have everything you need already stored up. Food, water, medical supplies and a way to defend yourself.

    Do yourself a favor and store up now so you will be ready for what ever comes our way!

    Thank you for your listing. I have had issues with the little flying moths in my pantry in the past. I've had to tear out everything and throw out grain, nut and chocolate items. which seems to be where they thrive and reproduce. To combat them- eliminate them- after cleaning out everything they live in, I have placed bay leaves and broken bay leaves on the shelves and in drawers. They do not seem to be issues any longer. I hope this helps with someone's long storage of these items.

    Big plastic airtight containers. Like 2lt. pop bottles, store rice, small beans etc.

    Just was wondering, since I store some of the same items, how long they will last in storage?
    Also, I've seen in different places, where people store wheat...how do you do so, as in what form, and where can it be found?
    I hate to sound quite ignorant, but I DO want to be somewhat prepared for the possible upcoming problems...:/

    Storing grains is important but you do have to know what you are doing. Wheat if sealed up good will last thousands of years but brown rice is much different. It has oils in it so it goes rancid much faster. If stored in a metal #10 can or in a plastic container it will only last 6 month's to a year. But if you vacuum seal it into canning jars and keep in a cool dry place it will last 3 to 10 years. If you need to know about storing foods I suggest you go to youtube.com and search for Wendy Dewitt. She has a series 9 of them that tells you how to start a food storage system. She tells about vaccum sealing and pressure canning , ect. Great series to watch. I worked with Wendy to develop my own 1 1/2 hour class using part of her info and adding in stuff we needed for our area. She's in Arizona (near Phoenix ) and I'm in extreme northern Missouri right by the Iowa border. I need to deal with keeping warm when it's -20 and she never thought about the topic. I also have many more water options than she ever dreamed of. But it's good solid info to get you started!

    We buy wheat from local farmers when available and from LDS Storehouse when we are near one. You can go to this site and click on locations to see if there is one near you too. Home Storage Center Order Form

    You can also order online at the LDS.org website online store. And also at the Honeyville grain online store. I love Honeyville because I can order as little or much as I want and the shipping is $4.49 for the whole order. http://store.honeyvillegrain.comwholegrains.aspx

    They have lots of other stuff too! I usually end up with just a box or two but we've filled a truck a couple of times and it was still $4.49 per order.
