Default 10 Simple Ways to Use Less and Recycle More

10 Simple Ways to Use Less and Recycle More

We all want to do our part for the environment, but with our busy work, school and family schedules, getting started may seem like too much of a chore. The good news is that being greener every day doesn’t take a lot of time or effort. And even better, that little bit of effort can save you money.

Here are 10 easy suggestions for helping the environment by reducing, reusing and recycling.

    1. Pack lunches to cut down on takeout packaging. Bringing lunch rather than buying takeout at work will also save your family money.
    2. Pack your lunch in reusable containers to cut down on the amount of waste created by disposable containers (and to save money over time).
    3. Avoid using disposable cups by bringing your own reusable cup to the cafe.
    4. When possible, consider buying locally grown food to reduce the carbon emissions produced by long-distance transport.
    5. Buy dry goods in bulk to reduce the amount of packaging that goes to landfills. Also, buying in bulk is usually a more economical choice.
    6. Install water filters on your tap-water faucet. This reduces plastic bottle waste and may save you money in the long run.
    7. Use rechargeable batteries and recycle your disposable ones to keep them out of landfills.

    8. Recycle e-waste such as used computers and cell phones and refill printer cartridges to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills. The Environmental Protection Agency’s website is a great resource for finding local e-waste recycling programs.
    9. Create a backyard compost pile; reuse vegetable and fruit refuse to nurture a healthy garden.
    10. Instead of tossing them out or adding to junk-drawer clutter, recycle your old eyeglasses by donating them to charity. In fact, your eye doctor may accept used glasses, as many practices now have their own programs.

Thanks for all the lovely recycle-tips, as an ecologist I love these things

May I add something to your thread?
You can re-use tin cans by cutting the bottom NEARLY out (the top is already out normally, when you've eaten what's in the can), then filling it with soil and a seed like a sunflowerseed, as a temporary pot.
The thing with nearly cutting the bottom out is that when you need to re-pot the whole thing when the plant has grown too big for the can, you can press the bottum up slightly and the soil will get pushed out as a package. Very convenient!

PS: Rip the paper off the outside of the can, this way your "pots" will look shiny

What a neat way to use tin cans (In planting).
When I was growing up we use to bake fruit cakes, nut bread, and banana breads in cans also ( used coffee cans and vegetable cans).
And of coarse we took the labels off so they wouldn't burn in the oven.... They made lovely Holiday gifts.
    Thanks for your tip Ulrike.
