    Default Diet Question(possibly sugar related)

Hey guys, I have a situation here I am hoping you can help me with because the doctors have no answer

    ok heres the situation

When my boyfriend eats anything with sugar he gets really tired, I mean extrememly and it is no better if he sleeps. He also has this reaction when he drinks anything with sugar. I have tried cutting the sugar if we make drinks like koolaid he has tried drinking things like gingerale and juice. It will be fine for awhile but then all of a sudden he will start getting really tired again. He has been tested for diabetes and anything else you can think of that could be medically wrong (all except for an allergy) and those tests came back perfect. He is not overweight, exact opposite no matter how much he eats he cannot gain weight (he never weighs more than 143) I know it makes me sick too LOL

Any ideas of what type of diet I can fix for him that will help with this sugar issue? I know the obvious would be no sugar but he doesnt want to cut out all sugar unless absolutely necessary. Since he has a problem gaining weight he enjoys his cookies and brownies etc.

    Any help would be appreciated

Ok this is right up my alley! I started out really tired all the time and sleeping didn't help. I was eating less but gaining more weight until I reached a point where I was in severe pain and couldn't get out of bed without help. the doctors told me I had a fatty liver and mentioned a bunch of other stuff and said I was dying. this was mid-December and they told me they'd see me in a month to discuss it further oh and have a nice Christmas. My whole family took the whole list of problems they gave us and started researching. the one thing we all came back to was the fatty liver and very high Triglycerides that couldn't even be counted. We immediately removed ALL simple sugars and starches. No sugar, honey, molasses. No white four, white rice, white potatoes, processed foods of any kind. No corn or fruit juices. 30 days later after following this diet when I reported back to the doctor they were stunned! My Triglyceride count was very low and I could run circles around all of them! I was a new person. I thought it would be hard to live this way but my whole family enjoys it much more. I've tried several recipe books and sites but the best book on sugar free desserts was one by Mani Niall called Sweet and Natural Baking ISBN# 0811810496 Everyone from Family reunion to Church dinners prefers my sugar free desserts from his cookbook over regular desserts! Try going sugar and starch free for 30 days to see if that changes things. if not I hope you can find a doctor who knows whats going on!

Does he eat the sweets or sugar drinks in excess? If he isn't a diabetic sounds like his pancreas is doing what it is suppose to-filter and convert the sugar. If you overload on the sugars your body does get tired because it has to work harder to process it. Have you tried a sugar substitute? If you use the Splenda Blend it is part sugar and part substitute. Cookies and brownies will still taste the same to him only less sugar. Is he a big carb eater as well? Might just be an overload on the carbs. Sounds like he must get some exercise and doesn't have a weight problem.

Here is an article that talks a little about food allergies, http://www.ibstreatmentcenter.com/Ne...teSept2006.pdf
    maybe he should get tested.

ok how much less splenda do you use in recipes I have thought about using this before but the price scared me LOL. I can't see spending 7.00 a bag unless you use considerably less. Of course if he needs it he needs it but that is why I haven't tried it before

You use it cup for cup, it is expensive.

The Atkins Diet Weight Loss Program: Diets - Weight Loss - Nutrition
The diet plan that brchbell talks about sounds like the Atkins diet.

No white potatoes at all. Sweet potatoes are ok! They are great baked and we make great oven fries with them also! Remember it's just for a month! Just to see if it will make a difference! Gravy is ok, you don't use that much of it. He can have all the meat, vegetables (except the starchy ones:white fleshed potatoes, corn, peas and Lima beans) Fresh fruits and whole grains. It sounded hard to me also but I found out it wasn't so bad and after the results it was a no brainer.. I could live with out that stuff altogether! But actually it isn't that easy either! White sugar/white flour stuff is an addiction! After a few months I was craving like you couldn't believe. After some research I found out how our body adapts to this refined diet and starts to need it just like drugs! It's been really hard to totally get it 100% out of my life! Everywhere you go there is refined sugar and starches! It makes it hard to go out and eat, go to pot lucks, ect! When traveling I actually take whole wheat hamburger buns with us so we can eat a sandwich without eating the white bread. I only drink water or milk on the road. Salads. But it's really hard traveling if we don't think ahead and plan for it. I use Fruit concentrate that is talked about in the book I mentioned earlier for a sweetener in baking. I use some Splenda where I've discovered the fruit concentrate don't work so well. Pumpkin pies needed Spenda and Cheesecake needed Splenda but everything else so far work great with the fruit concentrate. Chocolate Chip cookies are to die for! (uses grain sweetened chips from Sunspire.) Someone mentioned Adkins diet. I'm not sure what that is. We started with a list of foods not to eat and came up with meals to go around that. We don't use margarine, we use butter, real home made butter. We use fresh milk and make our own yogurt and butter. Don't have enough to make our own cheeses yet but working on it! We also work hard, very hard. I learned from my Amish neighbors. the have what our medical folk would call a terrible diet! Very high in fats. But they also work very hard each day so they can eat what they want to eat. Those in their colonies that change life styles such as going from farming to running a store are finding they can no longer eat their normal diet! they get fat and get heart disease, ect. While they are still busy they are no longer pysically active. Most of what they do, they can sit and do. Lifestyle makes a big difference. Coupled with diet and you can change your life quickly if you really want to do it! I wanted to live. While I'd like a big pan of brownies right now or a simple Hersey bar, I'd rather live. When you've reached the point that your kids have to pick you up to take you to the toilet and have to dress you each day because you can't anymore. then you discover the reason you are dying is because of your diet and you can change it all around. Trust me eating brown rice is wonderful! You are truly what you eat!
