At no more than 500 square feet, tiny houses have become the ultimate in DIY projects. The benefits of owning a tiny house range from cheaper living costs to its compatibility with a greener lifestyle. When it comes to living in a tiny home, it’s a smart idea to incorporate designs that also provide a function. A smaller home means less space to keep “stuff.” Fortunately for all of us, there are a number of unique storage ideas that are perfect for a tiny house.

1. Storage Staircase

The majority of tiny houses have either storage lofts or sleeping lofts, and some of them are only accessible by ladder. If climbing a ladder to get to the bedroom doesn’t sound appealing, then a custom staircase might be the best option.

While a staircase may take up more space than a ladder, the storage possibilities make it worth the space. Shelving, drawers, or cubbies can be built into the side of the staircase and create more than enough storage for a tiny house.

2. Mason Jars
Mason jars are an excellent DIY addition to the kitchen of your tiny house or any space where you need to store your odds and ends.

By attaching the mason jar tops to the underside of a kitchen cabinet using a strong magnet bar, you can create a rustic-chic storage option. Fill the jars with things like oats, herbs, or various types of pasta to create a rainbow of visually pleasing ingredients.

Pro Tip: The mason jar is also great for things like jewelry and spare safety pins!

3. Underfloor Storage

An often forgotten storage option. A clever way to use the extra space beneath the floorboards is by installing simple trap doors over the floor cavity. While it may be difficult to access the space during the day, it’s a great way to keep things like seasonal clothing or tiny house repair tools.

4. Bed Storage

Seeing as the sleeping space is mainly only used for sleeping; tiny homeowners have created ingenious ways to store the bed out of plain sight. Here are a few options for storing the sleeping space:Elevator Bed: This bed works exactly as it sounds. The bed can be lowered or raised to the ceiling out of the way at the push of a button.

Murphy Bed: This form of bed storage isn’t anything new, but is still an excellent option. If your bedroom is on the ground floor of your tiny home, a Murphy bed is ideal if you want the space to double as an office.

Trundle Bed: If you have raised flooring in your tiny home, a bed that can be pulled out like a drawer is handy for guests!

When it comes to owning a tiny home, making the most efficient use of the space is key. With a little creativity, it’s easy to come up with clever storage ideas that will help you make the most of your small space.
