    Default Keep Produce Fresh Longer

    Keep Produce Fresh Longer

Always remove produce from its original wrapping or containers. Take an appropriate-sized storage bag, and using a paper hole puncher, make holes in the bag (about 4 down and 4 across). Place your produce in the bag and store it in your refrigerator's veggie bins.

Thanks for the tip JoAnn. I also use my food saver, but I just seal it. I don't take all the air out. But I have found that if you push out the air, it does last longer, and also taking it out of the original wrapping helps too. I have to try the hole punch idea, never thought about doing that.

It's worked for me very well Tonia. Let me know if you get a chance to try it and what you think.

I have also heard that if you put newpaper in the bottom of the veggie bin, the veggies last longer. They say it is due to the newspaper absorbing the extra moisture.

I think I'll try the newspaper idea. It will make for easy clean-up.

You can also try wrapping a paper towel around your produce before placing it in the bag. This also absorbs the moisture and keeps the produce from rotting where the moisture collects.
I am SO looking forward to "empty-nest syndrome"!

My aunt used to wrap a clean cotton dishdrying towel around her freshly picked greens to keep them in the fridge longer. I usually do that with my lettuce. will have to try the newspaper and the holes in the zip lock. Great tips ladies.

This sounds like a good idea also--I'll have to try this one..
