Grandma's Molasses Sugar Cookies

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt

Melt shortening.
Let cool.
Add sugar, molasses and egg.
Beat well.
In separate bowl, sift together baking soda, flour and spices.
Add to first mixture.
Mix well and chill.
Form into balls.
Dip into granulated sugar.
Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

Grandma's Molasses Cookies
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup molasses
1 cup lard or Crisco
1 egg
1 tsp. ginger
1/2 cup hot water
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 Tbsp. soda

pinch of salt
5 cups flour

Mix sugar and molasses with melted lard or Crisco, 1 beaten egg,
ginger, cinnamon, 1/2 cup hot water, soda, and a pinch of salt. Stir
well. Add flour.

Makes a soft dough. Knead and cut with cookie cutter.

Bake in 350 degree oven. Cooking time depends on oven and how soft or
crisp and size of cookies. for regular shape gingerbread people about
6 inches a bake 8 to 10 min

When cookies are cold can be frosted if desired.
