8G SFP+ Transceivers: Leading the Transition to Higher Bandwidth Storage Networking*

Sponsors: JDSU

Overview: New consumers and enterprise applications such as digital music, video, interactive games, social networking, email, e-commerce, data center replication and disaster recovery continue to drive storage area network bandwidth higher every day. In 2005-2006, many storage system providers completed the migration from 2 Gb/s to 4 Gb/s for Inter-switch links and Host Bus Adaptor applications to support this rapid growth. Based on the ongoing bandwidth demands in the storage area networks, it appears that another upgrade cycle from 4G to 8G is around the corner.

With the need to migrate to 8G, a new small form factor pluggable (SFP+) standard has emerged, delivering 8Gb/s data over Fibre Channel protocols but not without a number of technical challenges. Today?s solutions need to address power consumption and emissions concerns, in addition to the obvious performance challenges of higher baud rates. Optical technologies, such as VCSELs, need to be carefully matched to state-of-the-art, high-speed integrated circuits to optimize these parameters, while still satisfying the standard link specifications.

In this presentation, we will demonstrate how JDSU?s vertically integrated strategy offers high performance and high reliability solutions to address the needs of today?s high-bandwidth storage applications. We will describe each of the link variants needed for a complete SFP+ product portfolio. Finally, we will discuss the challenges that the market faces in order to produce each of these link variants at the lowest possible cost.
