I will post my remedies again. I use a product called Pyranha. You can spray it on your animals for flea, ticks, flies etc. I also spray it outside my doors for ants and they don't come in. Cinnamon works also but gets messy at times. It depends on how many ants you want to get rid of.

Thanks so much to Michelle & the others who answered my ant problem!
Since they're actually walking in the front door, there's not much to do
about finding the nest or keeping them out --- several other houses on
the block have the same problem --- and I suspect many more do too, but
the residents are on vacation & don't know about it yet. I hesitate to
put down poison, or have it sprayed, as I have small children & toddlers
in the house. Last night they were milling around in front of the
pantry, so I spread cinnamon around the floor there & also all along the
threshold of the front door. That seems to be keeping them away today,
but its a messy solution, at best. LOL --- you should see the cute little
toeprints I now have across the floor (the baby's, not the ants' LOL!).

My dh is going to check out the hardware store today for some bait traps
that we can hide from the baby that will cure the problem once & for all.
    Thanks to all!

You can use Terro..but keep it away from your animals and kids. The ants keep coming back because, unless you kill the whole ant hill, they keep coming looking for their family and friends I have also heard that drawing a chalkline around the house, or cinnamon around the house, helps to deter them. Much safer around kids Worth a try. I bought the Terro at Walmart-it is in a small bottle, and does take a couple times and maybe a couple weeks to kill them, but it does work

The apartment where my daughter lives has ants. They got into some of her food
staples and even baby's formula powder in the canister and it had the top on.
Any suggestions as to how to rid the place of the ants and keep them out of her
food? Can she store the cans of formula powder in the refrigerator?

We have an occasional ant problem here. I keep a spray container filled with
vinegar and spray wherever it looks like they are both in the house and
outside. May take awhile, but this has usually worked.

There is a product called 'Terro' that is great for ants. Every time I have
used it they have completely disappeared within a few days. It is a very
sticky, liquid poison. You pour a tiny amount onto a piece of paper, and place
    it
where you see the ants. It will attract them, and they will take it back to
    their nest. Great stuff!

    Ant repellant
1-Spinkle cucumber peelings near ant infestations
2-Sprinkle Red chili powder, cream of tartar powder, salt or sage near ant infestations.
    ____________________________
    20 drops Peppermint essential oil
    4 oz distilled water
4oz spray bottle *mark the bottle and don't reuse for anything or use a used bottle for this!
Takes 2 weeks of daily use to remove ants completely
    ____________________________
Ants detest the smell of Eucalyptus oil, so make up a solution using 10 drops of essential oil to every 2 litres of water. Pour or spray over the nest and the ants will soon flee!

Anyone have any idea why ants would be invading my washing machine??? I've run the washer without clothes in it on HOT with a cup of bleach to try to make sure that it was clean and they're still active around it. Can't pull the washer out away from the wall in the garage because there's too much stuff piled too close to it.
