I hate the expensive junk. I never know what to do with it; it never fits
in. My fave favors are homemade magnets, seeds, mini plants, bookmarks, or
tree ornaments (the last only if you know all your guests are
Christian). You can make these cheaply, add cute or meaningful quotes, and
    everyone can enjoy them.

We gave out packets of Marigold Seeds. I bought them in
bulk and the repackaged them into small envelopes then
printed some stickers on the laser at work :
    Ann and Dean
    Sept 30, 2000
Please plant these marigold seeds in your garden to help
    keep pests away.
Something like that, can't remember the exact words.

    I did 250 for under $20.
    Hope this helps

Hmm--we didn't give out any favors. I guess because I've trashed everything
I've brought home from weddings--mostly candles.

I would think something edible would be the best choice--fancy candies or
cookies or chocolates. There are lots of people on Flylady like me who
don't want any little useless "pretties" sitting around, lol. And
definitely nothing with your name and wedding date on it that they would
feel compelled to save and create clutter with.

Hope this doesn't sound too harsh I am just very anti-trinket But if
it's something I can use up and enjoy for a brief moment, that's okay.

Thanks--I'm a flybaby too and that's sort of the message I was trying
to get across I'd rather have a really good piece of chocolate
personally. I still have a rose bud thing that was made out of hershey
kisses and cellophane that was from my ex-boyfriend's brother's wedding
back in 1995. Why am I keeping that?!?

What about matchbooks with your names & dates on them? They can use the
matches. Get the ones that come in a box, rather then the regular kind. Just
    to be different.

See, if it wasn't done up so "pretty", you could have had yourself a tiny
little chocolate fix a few years ago and cleared that baby out of your
house!! Might not taste so good now, and now it is officially "clutter"

That is true and honestly, I may have thrown it away during a fling,
but can't remember. In my defense, I did only save 2 or 3 of the candy
bars from my own wedding. I may put them in a shadow box or something.

I used hershey nuggets candy bars and bought candy bar wraps off ebay that were
personalized. I forget the exact amount I paid but I think for 150 guests my
favors may have cost $50.00 and I had some extra.

I gave out little white material picture frames (they held the table seating
numbers at the reception). They were inexpensive - see Michaels, hobby lobby or
any wedding catalog/magazine - and lots of people I know still have them
displaying some wallet size picture or another in their homes. I got a whole
lot of compliments on the gift and it feels nice to still see them displayed
some 10+ years later when I go to visit. Not to mention, the dual function of
seating card and gift, which saved me some money.

A Friend of mine made up a mix CD of songs that meant something to them.
Then made copies of them with nice labels they had printed. Very nice and
    pretty darn cheap to.

Another idea for the wedding... not as a party favor.... but get a bunch of the
disposable cameras and put a couple per table with a note saying something like
'please leave the camera when you leave and take as many pictures of the
gathering as you want'. After the wedding is over, get all the film in the
cameras developed. That way you will have many different views of the wedding
party and banquet (if you are having a sit down meal) as well as the
    professional pix.

I did this also; if you don't care what they look like you can get some pretty
cheap at Wal-mart that are 27 count films. I just bought the walmart brand kind
and they were fine. It was under $2.00 per camera if I remember correctly.

Okay, I'm a few weeks late on responding to this thread, but I wanted
to put my two cents in too....

First off, I didn't have favors at my wedding and no one seemed to
    notice.

But, that said, the coolest favors that I've seen were both from the
same wedding (very elaborate, i tell you). For each person (maybe
each couple?) on the table were tiny jars of honey with a little
sticker on the top that said something like "enjoy the sweetness and
think of us, love from bride and groom" and i think it was "honeymoon
honey" or something like that. so cute. totally usable -- took it to
work to add the honey to tea.

the other favor came after the valet returned our carkeys to us. (i
know, i know, a valet at a wedding...) a small gold heart keychain
had been attached to our keys with a thank you note from the bride
and groom thanking us for coming to the wedding. the heart is
engravable if i want to take it to a place like things remembered. so
cute, and i can put whatever i want on the keychain or even re-gift
    it if i'd like!

anyway, good luck planning the wedding.

I have never gotten anything 'useful' and I don't think people really
care if it's useful. All of the 'useful' things I've seen (on TV and
such) are expensive and ordinary--ie. tiny picture frames. And unless
it is someone really close to you such as a child or best friend, do
you really care if you have a candle on your table with someone's name
and wedding date on them when it's, say, someone you worked with for a
few months and don't even talk to anymore?
Our 'favors' were hershey's miniatures wrapped in personalized labels
that we got on ebay with our names and date on them. We also had the
tiny bubbles with a little tag on them with the same info but none of
it was 'useful.' We made sure we had enough of the hershey bars so
that everyone could eat one and save one if they wanted, but it wasn't
intended to be useful--just something they could put in a 'memory box'
and think of us when they see it--if they even kept it. For $20 total,
who cares if they kept it?
We had ivy at the reception and each of my aunts, my grandma, my
mom--in general, my closest relatives each got one, which, assuming it
lived will be a nice reminder. We got married in PA and the one my mom
took did great until she brought it out here to CO where it died.
That brings up one useful thing I guess--if you can get personalized
flower seeds, like forget me nots or some perennial that will come up
    and remind them of you.
But, in short, I wouldn't be worried if the things are 'useful' because
they're not really 'expected' to be.
    Sorry for writing a book!
    Erin
