For mine I just wore my usual clothes and

Since you are starting early, you can check the thrift/second hand stores.
We find most of our costume needs that way. I have the kids figure out what
they want to be and we improvise using the thrift store. I must admit like you,
we start early for a good selection because sometimes it will take a couple
of thrift store trips to put a costume together.

We also save all our costumes
from year to year. That way someone can reuse all or part of a costume.
We’ve made last minute costumes for some of my kids friends that way.

Another idea — can you sew? Walmart has pretty cheap material or again pick
something up from the thrift store. Once my daughter wanted to be a
      princess.

I cut up an old prom dress using the bottom as her skirt. I cut a
triangular piece for the bodice adding fake pearls and ribbon for decoration.
      The hat
was a piece of poster board with netting and ribbons. I think the whole
      thing cost less than $3.00.
It would be easy to add sweats underneath for warmth.
