Default Leaving Florida-bad for ur budget

We plan to leave Florida after 5 years due to the high cost of taxes
and insurance. We can't go back to NJ for the same reason and have been
considering Myrtle Beach SC, where taxes are reasonable. I will
definitely miss the Florida weather (except for today where's it's very
cold). My question is, is there anyone here that is from the area and
can tell me about the standard and cost of living in MB? And, of course
the winter temps. Thanks to all.

Mary Ann, I live right outside of fayetteville nc, 30 miles from the NC/SC border...cost of living for property is wonderful... I bought a 24 acre farm with 3 bedroom double wide and 5 outbuildings for 112,000 my taxes are 800 per year, my insurance is 700 gas right now is 2.01 fayetteville is 20 miles away with all major stores, etc.. I live in a little town of 2100 absolutely love it... the type of town that if you need something big from the feed store you can call them, they will deliver it for free the type of town that you run into the hardware store and it has hardwood floors and workers that know how to take something apart and replace the washers and only charge you .50 instead of the $20 it would have cost me if I went to Lowes to get help (that actually happen to me yesterday) Myrtle beach is expensive....it is so commercialized now.... we are 1 1/2 hours to the beach so we don't usually have too much risk for serious damage from hurricanes either, but close enough you can go to the beach for the day.

I can tell you that you'd be better off steering away from
tourist "hot spots", because you'll find the cost of every day items is
    higher due to tourists.

Maybe find a city outside of Myrtle Beach? I know the weather in some
area's of NC (specifically where my FIL lives) isn't that bad (compared
to where I live in MI). They rarely get more than an inch of snow at
any time, and even then, it melts quickly. It's much colder than
FLorida, but not like Michigan, or even Jersey.

I'd think South Carolina would be even warmer than North Carolina.

The closer you are to the coast, though, the colder it will get because
of the water & lake effect weather. Or, rather, ocean effect in this
    case.

I have friends here in NE Georgia that came up from Florida for the same reason! You might check out the state of Georgia- we are about 50 miles above Atlanta and the growth is catching up with us, but it's still a pretty reasonable place to live, cost wise. We are waiting on a "Winter Storm" now, but for us that means maybe 2" of ice and snow at the worst and it will all be gone within a few hours of starting. This happens once or twice a year in our area, max. If I can help with any specific information for my area, let me know- you can contact me off list at apiamama@yahoo.com.

You *could* move to Texas. The taxes aren't too high and the climate is just like Fla's. I live in Houston - the taxes are a bit higher - but if you live outside of Harris County (like Galveston or Brazoria) the taxes/insurance are a lower.

Texas is a big state, lots of places to go & they have no state income tax. We built a new house 3 years ago & my next door neighbor moved from California, she had gotten a divorce & they sold their house & with her share of the money paid cash for her house & just now went to work. Cheaper in Texas....

I vote for Texas too, my sister lives in Missouri city, just outside
Houston. The real estate is sooo much cheaper and no state income tax.

Yikes! My MIL just moved to Florida...actually she conned my hubby into
driving her back and they arrived yesterday. I sure hope she doesn't
    change her mind LOL!
