Tell me about Save-a-lot stores...- Budget101 Discussion List

While passing through a near by town today I noticed a Save-a-lot store. I'm not familiar with this company and after looking at their website and seeing some of the prices I'm still not sure it would be worth the drive (25m)...given the price of gas right now!LOL

Can some of you that shop at a Save-a-lot tell me what you like/dislike

about your local store? Do you think you save money? Would you/do you

buy groceries there every week, or just every once in a while?

Many thanks in advance for the opinions...

I shop at that store while i visit Florida. The prices were good the only thing is that you have to bring your own bags.

I'll have to check on the web site and see if there is one in my

"running area". I do make trips to other towns on occasion.

I shopped at ours when we had one. First caution: take bags or

stacking crates. If they are all the same, the clerk will ring up

your purchases and place them in another shopping cart. You are

responsible for bagging/boxing your own items. They do have bags for

sale, but why not take your own? They will have boxes in front to

use, too, but sometimes those will get low. I've even taken my own

stacking crate boxes to use when I've done a stocking up run on canned stuff.

They get "off-brand" items, store brands from various areas. I never

bought the fresh produce there, but regularly went in for canned

mushrooms. Other things I would buy there include ramen noodles,

canned fruit, tomato sauce, laundry detergent, fabric softener,

    sandwich meat, and bread.

I have to drive about 2 miles farther than where I usually buy

groceries, to the Sav-a-lot store. That's not far, but it takes me out

of my usual "errand" loop. I go there occasionally. They do have some

really great prices on some things, but not all. You just have to watch

and know the prices in other stores. Most of their products are "off-

brand" but probably made by the brand-name manufacturers.

I go there mainly if we have a bad week money -wise at our house.

Mostly I shop at Kroger and Walmart and a small neigborhood store that

    has great meat prices.

Its worth the drive. We do all our shopping there and aldis they have

A lot of brand named items as well at least here in NY. There produce is

    goo

    And also their meats.

I've been to Save a Lot once. The pricing is very similar to Aldi's.
They did have a little better selection than aldi's.

i shop there quite a bit and they have there own brands and sometimes

gete in name brands. i buy a lot of there stuff to be honest because

they are the cheapest in the area, and to get to any store i either

head there witch is about 20 mins away or to the big city witch is 30

mins the other way. i go there becuase for the store brand there vs

walmart store brand i save about 15 dollars a week. not a lot untill

you add it up for a month or year. i still have to shop at walmart for

somethings but not for every thing.

I shop there a lot. But what makes me crazy is that they bring in some new item we like. Then once we get hooked they change suppliers and the new item to match tastes really gross and is the same price as what they had before. They are bringing in more national name brands and the prices are inching up constantly. They aren't that different from a regular store anymore. Aldis is doing a much better job. But now that they are advertising on a national/television level, I fear their prices will start rising too.

I have a family of 5. My stepmom also a family of 5, shop at SAL. I

have noticed a HUGE difference in my grocery bills. I NEVER shop at

Buehlors, Holiday Foods..and other such stores...they are money

eaters. I lvoe SAL and thank god that we have one near. Aldis is

also a nice priced grocery store.

I think you'll have to go check it out once to find out. When our store

here opened about a yr and a half ago it was a great place to buy certian

things. Tuna was 55 cents and it was good tuna that had chunks of tuna not

the mushy stuff like chicken of the sea or startkist. Veggies, canned were

25 cents, lunch meat was 25 cents, chicken leg quarters were 25cents a

pound. I would always shop there, going out of my "errand loop" too to get

there for those certain items, sometimes finding other good deals. One month

i went in there and most of the things i shopped there for had doubled in

price! lunch meat is 50cents now, leg quarters went up to 79 cents, veggies

are now 48 cents tuna went up to 65 for a long time now my last trip i

noticed it was back down to 49 cents. I never go out of my way to shop there

but if i'm in the area i will stop and get tuna and produce, they have good

produce prices there but sometimes the produce is kinda shabby looking.
