    Default MYO Buttermilk

I am want to make a recipe that was given to me for "Banana Nut Bars" but the
recipe calls for 1/2 c buttermilk. I don't have any and only need it for this so
I really didn't want to buy a quart of it at the store. I checked the site for
myo but all that I found was for buttermilk syrup that says to put buttermilk in
it! Is there an easy way to make buttermilk or would it just be easier to buy
    the quart?

    TIA

I've READ this, so I can't testify, but the Frugle Zealot book says that you can
make buttermilk for cooking by adding a teaspoon of vinegar to a cup of milk and
letting it set for a few minutes before using it. The vinegar clabbers the milk.

I have 2 measurements from different sources. I prefer the first one the best. I
use it all the time to make Buttermilk Pancakes!

    1 Cup of Milk + 1 TB Vinegar = 1 Cup Buttermilk

    1 Cup of Milk + 1 Tsp Vinegar = 1 Cup Buttermilk

1 Cup Plain Yogurt can be used as an alternative as well.

    Hope this helps!

I would just use sour milk. 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 TBSP vinegar set aside for 5
    min.

You can also buy buttermilk powder in the baking goods section of your local
grocery store. You can make just what you need and store the powder in the frig

    almost indefinately.

    Tia,

You can approximate buttermilk by adding a few drops of vinegar to regular
milk. Let it rest a couple minutes before adding to the recipe. The milk
curdles a bit and creates the same effect as buttermilk. Since learning
this, I've never bought buttermilk because I always have vinegar and milk on
    hand.

If that taste doesn't suit you, be aware that they sell powdered buttermilk
in the baking aisle, I think near the powdered milk. Much less perishable,
of course, but still an extra expense if you don't think you'd use it much.

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions. I won't need to use them for like 2
weeks now! I knew I could count on your helpfulness and knowledge!

    Thanks again,
