    Home Remedies

I have been reading with interest the letters on home remedies. Are
there any remedies that are safe for small children? I have a
granddaughter that has been coughing, running nose (some), low fever on
and off around 2 weeks now. My daughter called the doctor and they told
her to give her another day and see how she was. She has not been to
the doctor this time. She has been in the past this winter with ear
infections and what the doctor said was just viruses. One time this
winter the doctor said she had the systoms of an ear infection but she
didn't have an ear infection and where she told her back a few days
later because she wasn't better and saw another doctor at the same
doctor office they told her my granddaughter ear drum had ruptured. She
seems to have been sick a lot this winter and on into this spring. I
wonder if she has a low immune system. She is very dark under her eyes
so I think she has alleries. She stays at a daycare center while her
mother works so I know they pick up a lot of germs there. Any help
anyone could give me would be appreciated.

My Mom had several she used when I was little. One was an indigestion type
thing. She made you drink a glass of water that had a tsp. of baking soda in
it. You burped like crazy, but that usually made you feel better. Another one
was if you really were nauseous, but had not thrown up, she made you drink a
glass of water with a tsp. of salt in it. That made everything come up, and
    then you usually felt better.

And, one thing she really believed in was fresh air. No matter if it was
snowing or raining, and it could have been below zero but all bedrooms had one
window that was opened at least a crack. She claimed you slept better with
fresh air. If you were cold just put more bedding on the bed.

Her other things were a diet for a sick person. Was usually broth, Jell-O
and poached egg on toast. The egg on toast made me sick to just think of it. I
    hated poached eggs then.

She also had some kind of ointment that a local Dr. had made years before.
The only ingredient I remember that apparently was in it was Carbolic acid. I
think that was it. Any kind of scrape had a clean rag soaked in that smelly
stuff and then it was wrapped around it. I remember once playing in a wading
pool at a neighbors and coming home with a red streak running up my leg from a
little scratch. She dosed me up and the streak was gone by morning. I would
be scared to death to try something like now. I would be thinking of blood
    poisoning or something like that.

Also she used lots of mercuricome and Vaseline, and vicks vapor rub was
rubbed on chests and backs for colds.

    home remedies

This is not an original home remedy from me. I got it off one of the many lists
to which I belong. I wish I could remember where I got it so that I could thank
    the original poster.

My great nephew has suffered from many respitory illnesses. He has a problem
with reflux so severe coughing would usually cause him to throw up. Not a good
thing to deal with in the middle of the night. I read on one of the lists that
a remedy for coughing was to rub the child's feet with Vick's Vapor Rub and then
put cotton socks on him. We weren't sure it would work but thought it certainly
couldn't hurt him. It works like a charm. I don't know how but it does.

I'm curious, I've always been fascinated by the various home remedies use by people before the advent of modern medicine. Not that I plan to use any, but just find the the paractices people used out of necessity fascinating.
Does anyone recall some of the home remedies used by parents or grandparents rather than say modern medicine? I recall my Mom used to talk about different things her Mother used, but unfortunately, both are gone now.
And, hubby suffered from warts that Compound W never really removed, and nothing availble from the local doctor seemed to work. His Mom took him to a someone local, now both passed on, who apparently "muttered" and "rubbed" something on the warts. The warts went away! The man needed to pass his healing on to a woman, and wanted to teach hubby's Mom, but she was a Christrian, and afraid to learn. I'd gladly have learned, but the man had sadly passed on by the time I entered hubby's life.
It's things like that I'd just like to hear about. Anyone have any memories and are willing to share?
Two things I remember my Mom talking about were the use of Keroscene, though I don't recall the specifics and "fat meat" for a wound.
Just curious, as a historian, I'm fascinated by the small daily living things people did, a la, the way old recipes are often lost.
    Thanks for any input.

trekglo - I've heard about raw beef on wounds; it's the enzymes in the meat if I remember right. . . . .When my boys were toddlers, we went to the lake where the two older ones were really sunburned on their backs. (there was absolutely no money for a Dr.). I made them a pallet on the livingroom floor in front of the water cooler (we didn't have reg. AC) then I put menthol shave cream on their backs. The cooler would dry the shave cream so I wet tea towels and laid them over the cream. When the towel started to dry, I changed it for another one. I know shave cream is soap and will dry the skin but it relieved the pain enough for them to sleep through the night and by morning the worst was over. Haven't thought about that in years.

One tried and true remedy for burns for me (except doesn't seem to work as well for sunburns) is mustard. If you get splattered by oil or touch a hot pot, grab the mustard from the fridge, squeeze it on then wrap with a washclothe or guaze and leave on for a couple hours. When my baby was 2 he wanted to help make cookies and reached in and grabbed the oven rack to pull the cookies out, did this, no pain and the marks all went away. Hubby touched a hot bbq rack and didn't want to believe me, he tried everything, an hour later we put the mustard on the pain went away and no mark. I dumped a pan of hot oil on my leg, should have been a 3rd degree burn, slapped the mustard on wrapped in a dish clothe then taped it on and left it for about 12 hours, pain went away right away and have only a couple little brown marks on the leg.

First time I learned this was about 22 years ago when I made the mistake of touching a hot muffler on a motorcycle, I have a pea sized brown spot from that. Has something to do with the vinegar in the mustard but using the mustard helps it to stay in place.

If you get a cut soak it in kerosene and it won't get sore. Put fatback on a boil and it will draw it up to a head. for an upset set stomache drink blackberry juice or mix a tablespoon of cola syrup in a half cup of water and drink. To unstop a chest bake 2 or 3 onions in the oven and make a poltice chest rub out of them. These are some that I remember my grandmother using. They worked.

Kim - I also use mustard for burns and learned about it the very same way!!! . . . . Another remedy: Used to help my friend who was a pet groomer and I got bitten on the wrist by a cat. Within an hour there was a large red, swollen knot - in 2 hours it was almost to my elbow. A friend told me to put Skoal (tobacco) in a coffee filter, wet it and put it on the bite. I did and taped a wash cloth around my wrist. The next morning there was a small bruise but everything else was gone.

Thanks alot for these remedies. I know the dawn works for fleas.... DH has hunting dogs(very well taken care of, taking care of 1 with 7 pups myself right now) and we use thiw all the time to get rid of not only fleas but ticks as well. I've heard of the wesson oil for earmites, but since we got the dog(he cleans my cats ears) haven't had a problem with mites!!! I have also used 409 for wasps, kills em dead. Found that one out by accident. Went to grab the raid and grabbed the 409 instead. I'm terrified of flying, stinging insects and didn't really think about it. Will have to try a few more of these.
