More than every STATE, there's usually one for every large city, or
county, as well. There's thousands of them.

Freecycle is awesome. Look for one in your area at http://www.freecycle.org
Members post what they are looking for, along with what they no
longer need. They are local areas, so you just drive over to pick it
up. No money exchanges hands... it's all free.
GREAT way to keep stuff out of the landfill, de-clutter your house,
and save some money! I don't know what I did BEFORE Freecycle!

    Re: Budget101.com : FreeCycle

I belong to freecycle too here in San Diego. I also have got things and gotten
    rid of things.

For example, I was wanting a lawn lounge chair for my yard. I ended up with 2
FOR FREE (because that is the condition with freecycle). They are the heavy
resin kind. They just needed a clean up job, and not a bad one at that.

I think you can go to http://www.freecycle.com and see if there is a group in your
    area.

    Re: Budget101.com : FreeCycle

The web address is not http://www.freecycle.com. It is http://www.freecycle.org. It is a
great website and yes they have it for any county. Click on your region and
state and county. You need to register for yahoo which is free. You need to
ask to join and then you can either get individual emails about offerings and
wantings or you can just go to the website. It is very cool, we received a free
    van. Hope this helps.

    Re: FreeCycle

I too live in Ohio and do Freecycle all the time. My advice, is when you
want to get rid of something is to get the person's address and then drop it
off at their home. This helps you avoid no shows.
No shows are very typical however.

    FreeCycle

Hi everyone. I just responded privately to someone and thought I would
share this publicly in case its not been posted or you have not heard
    of it.
There is a group called Freecycle out there where people post their
unwanted stuff to keep it out of landfills. Some things people post
    are REALLY nice.
I have recieved crystal lamps, a sectional sofa in outstanding
condition, a vcr, porcelain dolls, etc.
Its also a fantastic place to give away what you no longer need or
want. So it works in both directions!

Just go to freecylce.org and find your state and then county and join
the egroup. On some of them you can join neighboring counties too.

Hope you all find great use from this!

There are several in my area too. I've given a few things away on freecycle but never got anything.

    Re: Budget101.com : FreeCycle

I've had some good experiances with Freecycle and some rotten ones.
I've noticed that lately, it's gotten to be people who have a
serious case of the gimme's. Over the past few months, I've seen
people asking for new vehicles (specifically, something at least
2002 or newer, perfect working condition, please! No gramma-cars!),
brand new video game systems (Someone asking for a PS3 two days
after they came out, someone who wanted an Xbox 360, etc), people
who want purebred dogs (with papers, please, so I can breed!), etc.

One girl posted asking for a pure bred dog every other day for 2
weeks. Finally, she posted stating she recieved one (I can't recall
specifically, but I -think- she said they bought one instead). About
2 weeks after that, she was posting it on freecycle, because she
couldn't take care of it. Not 2 weeks passed before she was again at
it, asking for another pure bred dog. This time, could it be
something that required less care, please? She did that just about
every other day for several weeks, until people were getting mad
enough to email the mod, and ask that she be removed from the group.

I really don't mind the site, and for every "bad apple", there are
good people there. But, more and more often, people with
the "gimmee's" are posting. I think Freecycle has changed a LOT over
the past 2 years, and not always for the better.

    Re: Budget101.com : FreeCycle

I belong to the local Freecycle, and I love it. I helped my sister give away
alot of stuff from her "pack rat" basement, I've given away furniture and books
and have picked up some really good items, plants are my special love. Someone
gave away a sailboat! Go figure. Yes, there is a real tren to the gimme
attitude. The moderator had to post a limit on number of "wanteds" a person
could post a day. I think wanteds detract from the spirit of Freecycle, I mean
it is for people to recycle their "no longer wanted's and needed's, not an
online wish list. Just my opinion. Happy New Year all!

I think that your experience with Freecycle depends on which group
you belong to. Here in Iowa the groups are fairly well moderated and
there are strong warnings about the "Gimmee's". A moderator can
delete posts that are considered inappropriate. Contact the group
moderator if you're having a problem.

    Re: Budget101.com : FreeCycle

Oh, I have. In fact, it got so bad at one point I contacted Freecycle
itself, asking for an interm mod to look over the group. Unfortunatly,
the woman who runs it also went back and removed most of the posts
before that point (albeit only to show a "clean" group to the woman-
the posts had sat for weeks up until that point).

All I got for my efforts was being put on fully moderated status,
because I "dared" to repost the rules to the board as a gentle
    reminder.

I've pretty much just stopped using it. I'm 2 blocks away from
GoodWill, so when I need to get rid of something, I just take it down
there. I don't have to wait a week (or longer) for my post to be
posted, I don't have to wait days for someone to actually come and pick
    it up, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I think the general CONCEPT of Freecycle is great.
I just wish that our own group were much better moderated.

    Re: FreeCycle

We have 2 freecycles in the area. Our moderator put a
2 per month gimmee per person. You can give but you
can't ask for things more then twice. It slowed up a
few people that were always on there asking for things
but not giving anything. We do make exceptions for
people setting up new residences and let them put
    multiple things in one listing.
