Default how to grind whole cloves

I have a chili rec that calls for ground cloves. The jar of ground cloves was 7.00 for a small jar at the supermarket. I have whole cloves on hand. How do I grind whole cloves so I can use what I have?

I just beat mine in my pedestal... but you could add them whole and then just pull them out when done..

They make actual grnders called electric spice mills
.. they're pretty much like a coffee grinder. In fact
some people just use a coffee grinder (but you really
need to use a new one, not one you've already used for
      coffee beans.

If you're really stuck (don't have the above and don't
plan on buying it), I don't see why you can't just put
the cloves in some plastic wrap or wax paper, and just
give it a few good smashes with a good old fashioned
      hammer.

You can also grind them in your coffee grinder or Magic Bullet....

I would use a mortar and pestle, but if you don't have one, perhaps you could use a rolling pin and a wooden block? Place the whole cloves in a very sturdy plastic bag, then on the wooden block, and use the rolling pin to grind them into powder? I haven't tried this, but think it should work

You can run them along the wood chipper thing (I can see it, but not recall the exact name) is it long and about an inch wide, looks like a wood plane for building things, but you use it for nutmeg and cloves. Or you can put them in your electric coffee grinder (get one just for using with spices if you do it often. Don't use the same one for spices that you use to grind whole coffee beans.)

I agree that $7.00 is a bad price. I lucked out, though. I found the ground cloves on sale at another grocery store for $5.00. The catch was that I had to have that store's card.

A little ground cloves goes a long way. Most recipes I've seen call for 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves.

For all spices I find the best price at World Market. Most of their fresh spices are dated and >99 for a bag. You can afford to update them since they lose their freshness quickly when ground.
