Default Progressive Insurance Budget question

I've learned today my liability coverage decreased. I also learned

my collision, rental and comprehensive coverages increased $83.53 for

6 months keeping the $250 deductibles for each. I've been driving 21

years without tickets or accidents. Customer service assured me the

increase was not anything I did but it has occurred statewide.

My question to you, since I am concerned, is what to do when my

financing ends for my vehicle. On one hand, if I keep the coverages

as they are, I will be fine should there be a car accident, fire,

theft or vandalism. On the other hand, if I end the collision,

rental and comprehensive coverages, my 6 month policy would drop

dramatically, but should there be a car accident, fire, theft or

vandalism, everything would fall on me financially including repairs

    and car rental.

My underinsured, uninsured and roadside assistance did not change.

I've done policy comparison periodically but Progressive keeps

    winning.

I owe $9000 which will end Oct 2009, if I can manage it sooner.

    One driver

    One vehicle

    Discounts I receive:

Odometer discount 5% (2004 trailblazer acquired Oct 2003 8 miles now

    has 50,009 miles).

    Homeowners' discount

    Electronic payment discount

My extended warranty coverage bumper to bumper mechanical covered new

gas tank, rodent damage has been paid off.

What would you do and why?

    Thank you,

    Consuelo

I am a licensed property and casualty agent. In my opinion I would never

carry a deductible that low--you would be AMAZED at how much you can save by

jumping up to a $500 comprehensive and collision deductibles. On my home I

    always do $1,000.

If you have a lien holder on your vehicle I have never seen one that does

not require you to carry collision insurance. Because this protects "them"

in the event of an accident. So before doing this---I would definitely call

them first or review your paperwork.

Cansuelo, you need to determine the value of your vehicle. Check Edmonds, Kelly Blue Book etc. on the net to see about what the ins. co would give you if your car was totaled, stolen or whatever. Then calculate how much you pay per year for collision and comprehensive coverage. If what they would pay you is even close to what it costs you to insure it, then it's not worth paying for the coverage. I have a very nice 20 year old Nissan 300ZX. It's worth a lot to me, but if it were totaled, the ins. co would simply see it as another 20 year old car and I'd be lucky to get $500! I dropped the collision and com. coverage on it about 4 years ago, so I figure I'm already about $1,000 ahead of the insurance game.

Progressive has actual agents with offices. If you live near one, maybe stopping in and talking to a person might help lower the inflation in your policy. I agree, $80 is a lot!

Also, if your state has insurance brokers, they can help find a lower rate.

Good luck and personally I would never take away that coverage because you never know what may happen.

    Default Progressive Insurance Budget question

Insurance is always a risk vs. cost game but one option is to increase your deductible. It usually makes a significant difference in your monthly/yearly premium. Even if you put half of the premium difference into a savings account, you'll probably still have enough saved should you be in an accident to cover the increased deductible. And glass insurance is usually not worth the extra it costs to buy it. Check on the cost of a replacement windshield and how much you would have to pay, then see if it's really worth it.

You have a very good driving record and if any potential accident was caused by another person, their insurance company would be liable for a rental, repairs, etc - replacement very rarely covers the cost of a vehicle whether you're insured or not. If you don't rent cars very often for vacations, etc, it may just be cheaper to buy the insurance through the rental agency each time you rent a vehicle.

A good insurance agent should be able to discuss the pros and cons of each item on your coverage policy to help you make the best choice possible for you.

I forget... does Dave recommend Gap insurance as well? I had it on one car but don't on my current ones. I know he doesn't recommend being upside down on the cars at all, but if you are?
