Default Need Help To Plan And Budget Things So That I Have Dinners

I am a single mom with 2 kids and in the process of finalizing my

divorce. I have weeks were I get paid and have weeks were we are

Squeaking by on little to no money after all the bills are paid. I

could use ideas and menus for having stuff on hand to fix for those

weeks where I don't have any extra cash to get groceries. I would like

to see how ya'll do it and what kinda of menus you come with just from

pantry items. I could use all the help and ideas you can sling my way.

    Thanks a bunch

Default Need Help To Plan And Budget Things So That I Have Dinners

    Hi Kat,

I am a mom to 5 kids ages 8-13. Two are teens and

they eat a LOT! We are on a tight budget, and I've

managed to get our grocery bill down to $150 a week.

I do it primarily using Aldi's and Dollar

    General/Stroehmann's Outlet as my backups.

IF you have an Aldi's near you, go to www.aldi.com.

They have hundreds of really good recipes there that

kids like! I printed out about 40 of them, then put

them in plastic sleeves in a 3 ring binder. (I had

this stuff on hand, left over from buying school

    supplies last fall.)

Each week, I let each of the kids choose 1 or 2

recipes from the book. Then I go to the Aldi's site

and checkmark the ones they chose. It prints out a

shopping list for these items. After that, I go

through the kitchen and cross anything off the list

that I already have. We've liked all of the recipes,

except we do find that sometimes you need to spice

    them up a bit more.

Doing this has saved us a small fortune. Prior to

doing this we spent $850-1000 a month on food.

Once I have my list, I put an approximate dollar amt.

next to each item. That way, if I go over I realize

it early on in the shopping trip. Also, ALWAYS pay

cash, don't use your debit card. You will be so much

more aware of how you are spending your money.

If you don't have an Aldi's, maybe there is another

type of discount store out there where you can do

    something similar.

    Good luck to you!

My biggest pantry item is RICE! It costs little and goes a long ways. This

goes with any leftovers you have. Chicken, pork, and beef. (We take the meat

and cut it up before we even put it away. You can also freeze the meat). We

make rice, throw in the meat and a couple of canned veggies and we have surprise

soup. If you want it a little thicker, you can throw in about 1/2 cup of

    instant mashed potatoes.

I was sent this link. It's pretty nifty. You check off what you have and

it comes up with things you can make to eat. Some stuff is really simple

like if you put in eggs and bread, it'll come up with an egg sandwich. I

    hope this helps. =0)

    speaking of rice,
has anyone seen an increase (dramatic) in price or any stores rationing it?

It would still be worth the drive if you could do a monthly stock up.

I'm trying to cut my trips to the store to 1 or 2 a month, instead of 4.

    I live in the country.
