My husband graduated from Boot camp this year and I used yahoo travel for the best prices for hotels. I looked around for weeks and this was the best price that I could find. If you have AAA they give pretty good discounts too. I dont know about marine bases but you might want to call the welcome office there to find out the best area to stay in. Some areas near the army base in SC were really bad, drug and prostitute neighborhoods. HTH!!

I always check at least two of the online booking sites, such as

Travelocity.com and HotelDiscounts.com, as well as my AAA Tour Book

    for the area.

In looking at both those online sites, I see quite a few hotels/motels

in the $45-$65/night range in Bluffton or on Hilton Head Island. I'm

not sure if all the smaller lodging places in Beaufort would show up

on these online booking sites, but it gives you a bargaining chip for

calling a more local one. If you have a AAA card or know someone who

does, definitely pick up the South Carolina Tour Book. It will show

you all the local hotels in that area and make it easier for you to

call if you don't want to use the online sites.

You or your son will know best how near you need to stay to Beauford

and Parris Island and the most appropriate areas.

From the Marine website (http://www.mcrdpi.usmc.mil/visitors/), it

says: "Visitors to graduations at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris

Island, can find lodging, dining, tours and attractions in nearby

Beaufort, Port Royal and Bluffton. Please view detailed listings at

the following link or contact the Beaufort Regional Chamber of

    Commerce Visitor Center at 843-986-5400."

When I looked at the Chamber of Commerce site, it simply lists a

directory of all the hotels/motels in the area; there are lots of the

less expensive chains listed such as Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn Express,

Days Inn, and Super 8. So your lodging might actually be quite

affordable if places aren't sold out already because of the graduation.

Hope this helps. Congrats and a big thank you to your son for his

    service!!

    More suggestions:

Make sure you ask for any possible discount rates that may apply to

you and your family. In my checking, the lowest rates seem to be for

Internet booking, AAA members or seniors, then followed by those with

government/military IDs. So if you have don't have a AAA card but

grandpa (or over 50s) with you, make the reservation in his name.

One hotel which kept coming up as a low rate was:

    Suburban Extended Stay Hilton Head

    1376 Fording Island Road

    Bluffton, SC, US, 29910

Can he get you a room at the on-base lodging? He will get the active duty military rate. Otherwise, have your son call and ask local hotel for the active duty military rate. No need to mention his graduation, just that he is active duty military. Herlean

A tip for people ever using any kind of discount.. ALWAYS ask what

the rate of the room is before mentioning any kind of discount. After

working in the military ITT office, we often found that the rate when

asking for the dicounted rate first was the same as the original

rate!! When you get the original rate first however, and then ask for

the discount rate, you will get a lower rate. Dishonest on their

    part, but it's true.
