Default Replanting onions that have sprouted ?

Do I just cut off the top portion of the onion and plant it in the soil?
Hope Everyone Is Enjoying The Day. Best Wishes From MN ~ Pamela

This is something I've been wondering about also...It would be great if so.

I just dropped the whole thing into a hole dug in the dirt. Growing great right now, but I have no idea yet what is under the surface.
I used to eat a lot of natural foods until I learned that most people die of natural causes.

2 Saturdays ago I got extra spring onions from the farmers market after I told the vendor we were using them for an experiment to regrow the onions. I used them in cooking adn then placed the white part and roots in the bottom of a glass of water. By this past Saturday the stems were taller than the 12 oz glass I used. The girls were SO excited. There's also a video on facebook and youtube where a woman took a regular grocery store onion, placed 3 toothpicks in the sides so she could suspend the onion above a plastic cup full of water. She took daily pictures of the roots growing and the stem growing. It was really neat.

That's so neat! I've got some green onions in the fridge..think I'll try that one too.
Once the roots start growing again, do you plant them?

Green onions are easy since they still have their roots. Just plant them in the ground and they should continue to grow. I haven't tried them yet since they getting eaten too quickly.

I fully intend to play with the green onions-thanks so much for the idea, tips, and information.

But I was still wondering about the regular onions that have sprouted like the OP asked... Can they be planted in the soil and grow...basically turn into an onion plant.

Mine seems to be doing well and it went straight from the onion bag to the planting pot. I notice it has developed a 2nd stalk.
