I made this for a teacher back-to-school breakfast, and could have made another slow cooker full~ they were gone in a flash...and I am Northern, so not a pro at grits.

Basic Grits for a crowd

1 cup of grits ( not instant)
5 cups of water
1/2 to 1 tsp salt~ to your taste
1/3 t 1/4 cup of butter/margarine~ also to your taste

Place all ingredients in the slow cooker the night before and cook approximately 8 hours on low. In the morning, stir and add, if desired:

salt and pepper to taste
1 cup (or more) shredded cheese of your choice

Mix well and serve hot, alone or as a side dish.

Serves 8 as a main dish, or more as a side with breakfast.
