My sil has badly swollen feet, ankles and calves. She has been tested

for everything. Heart ok, blood, ok, etc. The doctor said there could

be 200 reasons for them. Meanwhile, she is suffering. Does anyone have

any home cures or suggestions? It has been going on for about 5 weeks.

Any one have experience in this? In the am it is better but walking

around and later in day it is worse. Louise

Louise As often as she can she needs to sit with her legs up. that is in a recliner with her lfeet above her heart. If it is any typeof circulation problem this will help. She also needs to do this more often during the day especially in the evening. Gail North East PA

Get her to go swimming every day. It takes the pressure and weight

off your body, and can help alleviate the pain that accompanies the

swollen feet/ankles/calves. Just being in the water helps, even if

she is just standing, but floating on her back might help quite a

bit, too. Just in general, though, the water can really help. My

friend is pregnant (due in 2 weeks), and has horrible swelling

problems, and she tries to get into the pool at her local Y several

times a day, because of how much it helps. It won't help immediatly,

but being in it for an hour really helps the swelling to go down for

    her.

Also, tell her not to sit for long periods of time, but to get up

and walk for 5 minutes for every hour she is sitting (such as at

work). She should also avoid standing for long periods. Basically,

she should make sure to take breaks from standing or sitting for

    long periods of time.

At night, she should lay with her legs raised above heart level for

an hour or two before sleeping. She could try to sleep with her feet

raised on a pillow, too, but if she moves around a lot, that might

    not work.

She should limit how much sodium she is taking in, as well, as that

can cause more swelling/water retention/etc. Tell her to go with low

sodium or no-sodium canned items, and to cut back on salt if she

uses it as a flavoring. Carbohydrates can also cause swelling, so

she should cut back on things like pasta, bread, and potatoes.

She should also start drinking water, at least 8 cups/bottles a day,

as it actually helps your body get rid of excess water retention, if

that's what might be causing it.

Support stockings can help, but the nicer ones are very expensive.

To help a bit, she can try to wear a constrictive sock and shoe

combo. With my friend, she hates how her feet feel after a day in

her tighter tennis shoes, but the times she has worn looser shoes,

her feet swell even worse, to the point where her normal shoes don't

    fit.

Exercize can help as well, light walking, the swimming I mentioned

above, etc. Something low impact (or, no impact like swimming or

    water aerobics provides).

    Hope this helps some!

I had this problem before. Other people noticed the swelling, never me.

Went to my doctor and I had a bunion. Surgery to remove the bunion

corrected the problem. I think it was something with the distortion of the

toe bones messing up the circulation. Also what is his salt and water

intake? If it is a bunion, the bunion is very noticeable.

    Hi Louise,

Has her doctor prescribed blood pressure pills?

I do know that all of a sudden my skinny (narrow) feet and ankles

started swelling up and my doctor decided that it was caused by my

blood pressure. It was not that high, but I did have noticeable swelling.

She has had me on 1/2 of a small pink pill every morning for the

past couple of years, and I haven't had the swelling problem since. I

can look up the prescription name later if you would like. It's very

    inexpensive, about a $3.00 per month co-pay.

    It works for me.

swelling in the ankles known as EDEMA could because the lymph system is not moving. I was told the swelling in my ankles and feet would be alleviated with exercise. Here is a portion of an article from the "tribune online" http://www.tribuneindia.com/2007/20070214/health.htmin which it states: "It is essential to incorporate an exercise program to move and drain the lymph fluid in order to reduce edema and thereby improving the functional use of the limb involved. "

Living with lower limb swelling

Swelling in the lower extremities, more so in the ankles and the feet, is a common occurrence, especially among the elderly. This is caused by accumulation of
fluid, and the condition is known as edema. It is not a disease but a symptom of various diseases and of varied etiology. Lower limb swelling primarily occurs due to disturbances in water/protein balance. Weakening in the valves of the veins in the legs makes it hard for the veins to push blood back up to the heart leading to the accumulation of fluid in the lower extremity. Lower limb swelling is treated according to the underlying condition causing it. For example, if edema is caused by either of the lung diseases like emphysema or chronic bronchitis, quitting smoking would be advised if the patient is a smoker. Cutting down on excess alcohol intake, and monitoring and treating coronary artery disease would be advised for patients with chronic heart failure. In addition to treating the underlying diseases, management of this kind of swelling comprises the following:

Elevation --- Put a pillow under the legs while lying down.
Compression with stretch bandage or stockings.
Do not sit or stand for long periods of time without moving.
Limit salt intake.
Take diuretic (commonly called a "water pill"), which helps in excreting excess fluid from the body.
Exercise programme
[/list]It is essential to incorporate an exercise programme to move and drain the lymph fluid in order to reduce edema and thereby improving the functional use of the limb involved.

Put your feet up as much as possible.
Sleep on your back with extra pillows under your feet.
    Drink water.
Take the salt shaker off the table.
No tight shoes or knee-high pantyhose.
