    Default Onion Bread Mix in a Jar

    1/4 cup Dehydrated Onion Flakes
    3 1/3 cups Flour
    2 tablespoons Sugar
    1 tablespoon Dry Milk
    1 1/2 teaspoons Salt
    2 3/4 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast
    OR 2 1/2 teaspoons Quick Acting Yeast


    Place onion flakes in a small zip baggie and set aside. Do the same with yeast, or set aside a prepackaged envelope of yeast.

    Mix and place the remaining ingredients into a quart sized jar. Lay baggies of onions and yeast on top of mix and place lid on jar.

    Use scissors to cut a 9 inch-diameter circle from fabric of your choice. Center fabric circle over lid and secure with a rubber band. Tie on a raffia or ribbon bow to cover the rubber band. Attach a card with the following directions:


    1-1/8 cups Warm Water (110 degrees F)
    1 Tbsp. Vegetable Oil

    Place all wet ingredients into the bread pan in the order recommended by your bread maker manufacturer. Insert the bread pan into the bread maker, and select "White", desired crust color, rapid or normal baking cycle and loaf size. Select desired delay option, and press Start.

    Oh goodness...this sounds great, but I wonder how you would prepare it without a bread machine?

    In most bread-machine recipes you simply dump in the ingredients, and then the bread machine does the mixing, kneading, and baking. To omit the bread machine, just do this by hand, Use lukewarm water or other liquid to encourage your yeast. Mix everything well and knead until smooth and elastic; you may need a little more flour so that the dough won't be sticky. Let rise for about an hour in a warm place. Shape into loaves in appropriate pans and let rise again until doubled in volume.
    As for baking times, For regular white breads, I have found that a baking temperature of 375 to 400 deg F (190 to 205C) for 25 minutes ( at 400 deg for recipes without eggs, honey and milk) to 45 minutes at 375 deg for recipes with honey, eggs and milk usually works out.

    I've not figured out how to do a "thank you" without posting...but I really sincerely do appreciate the directions. Thinking about making this tomorrow...
