Default How do I get out of this mess??

Last month my phone bill was over 300 dollars! This month it isn't any

better at past 200 dollars! I have been trapped up in what I thought

were great deals, I ordered a cell phone throu the phone company with

the lease being for a year, the plan for 30 something dollars per

month. Then when I moved I was told that in order to transfer my

sevices I needed to upgrade my internet to DSL,well I thought this

wasn't right but went ahead and did, thinking I can cancel when I got

here, but they also said I agreed to a yearly contract and could not

cancel it. I have both dial up and DSL billed on my bill,I can't use

the DSL because my tower isn't made to hook up to DSL and I have to

buy a Ethernet port sepratly to use it! They told me it would be more

expensive to cancel both the cell phone and the DSL becaue I would

have to pay for them anyways, then to keep the services! I don't even

use the darn cell phone!! What do I do?I got stuck in the offers

thinking I was saving money, but as i came to find out,it was all false

advertizing and I was thinking of canceling all services and trying to

find another telephone provider, but I think thats not the right way to

go.What do u all think? I can't afford these high phone bills!

If you feel that you've been tricked in to thecell phone contract etc, I would get legal assistance, I dont know if you wouldqualify for one through the county, but otherwise get prepaid legal assistance, you can use it for all kinds of situations, we got it and use it for what ever, we only pay $25/month and its definately worth it, ofcourse you can cancel it at anytime. I think the price has gone up a little since we signed up. Thank you, Maja

Call customer service and explain it all to them. That you feel that you

    are being ripped off.

If they don't fix it, then I would surely call another phone co. and just

    start over.

    Good luck!

Please be aware that if you are under a contract (one year or whatever) this would not solve your problem because you will still owe the whole amount for the term of the contract (or whatever their cancellation penalty is if they have one). If you just cancel and don't pay them it will go to collections. Legal assistance is probably your best bet. Also, I couldn't tell from your email, but if your dial-up and your DSL are both coming from the same company then you shouldn't have any problem getting your dial-up cancelled since the DSL is an upgrade on the same service. However, if they are with two different companies then that would not work.
If you are not using the cell phone anyway, you should be able to switch to the lowest cost plan they offer without penalty (this may differ by state). You will still have to pay for the phone, but your bill will be much lower. We looked at this when my dh was laid off. It would have cost a fortune to cancel our cell phone service--plus it was the number dh used for business contacts which is very important when job hunting--but we could lower our plan to the least number of minutes they offer which would have saved up over half on our bill. Fortunately he found a new job about the same time his severance ended, so we never did have to change it, but it was good to know that it was an option. Also, when you call customer service, always ask to speak to a supervisor if you are not getting the answer you want.Usually the person answering the call cannot do anything that is not explicity
spelled out in the company's policies, but the supervisors often have much more leeway. (This is especially true with health insurance!!!!) A final suggestion would be to contact the Better Business Bureau. They can help resolve issues like this. Good luck, Kristin

Try this phone number for cell phone complaints, 800 669 5556. Tell them what happened and they might be able to help you. I don't remember who gave me this number, but it's worth trying.

As with anythng check your options-don't call yelling at customer

service but calmly explain that you need to change or "CANCEL"

services. If you cancelled and paid the 200 early cancel fee it

sounds like you will still win in the long run. They never tell you

about the contracts when selling you something only when you

threaten to leave. You could pay the fee then go to a carrier

without a cancellation fee...usually your cable providers (Comcast,

time warner, WOW) some of those. If after explaining your situation

and then if you have no resolution, cancel - What do you have to

lose except saving over $200 a month is services you can't use!!

    Good luck...
