Quiet! and a recipe
I thought I hadn't been receiving emails so I came to Yahoo Groups--
but I guess we're just quiet!! I switched email addresses and
thought that was the problem, but it's just a slow day I guess.
I made something out of my "What to cook when you think there's
nothign in the house to eat" cookbook (GREAT cookbook when your
pantry is low or you're home alone--dh is on travel right now) and
it was pretty yum and cheap. I used the last scrape of jelly out of
a jar and a square of baking chocolate that has been in my cabinet
for YEARS forgotten . . .
2 slices bread
1 Tbsp jelly
1 Tbsp chocolate (chips, grated chocolate, syrup, whatever)
3/4 or 1 cup milk
1 Tbsp sugar
Grease a small baking dish the size of a piece of bread. Put one
slice of bread in dish. Dot or spread with jam, sprinkle with
chocolate and raisins (if desired). Cover with additional slice of
bread. In small bowl, combine egg, milk, vanilla and sugar. Pour
over bread. Bake uncovered 30-35 min at 350 until brown on top and
custard is firm.
My book also had a recipe for cheese strata--same concept, except
use a good melting cheese and put a little mustard on the top slice
of bread, bottom side, and no sugar/vanilla in the milk mixture.
It cooks up like a bread pudding, very filling.
