I have buzz cut my DH's hair since shortly after we
were married. For DS, I use coupons for SuperCuts or
go to the beauty school in fall and winter, then buzz
it for the summer. I just got a perm at the local
beauty school for $51 yesterday, including wash, cut
and style (not tip). Similar perm in our area would
have run me at least $90 (plus tip). And I never have
problems there--which I have at most other places I've
gone. They are actually more careful because they are
being supervised and graded.
