I also can't find washing soda near where I live. Someone said that they get it at Walmart, but the Walmart in my town does not carry it. I once contacted Arm & Hammer about whereI could buy it. The nearst location that they could come up with is 35 miles from my house. This was a Harris Teeter store in a high end neighborhood. The price of the soda was so high that I did not save any money making my own detergent.
Is there another brand of Washing Soda other than Arm & Hammer that might be cheaper?

there will be at least 1 store in area that does carry it; only 1 that i know of in local area does; call around to see who does carry it in your area; if literally no one does, ask them for it or check on line I am sure you can order it; however, in the entire area that I live in only 1 store DOES carry it; & I found out by asking on line who did in local chat forum.

I just did the google search. Washing soda is Sodium Carbonate. I have been buying this every summer for the last six years and did not know it. We put it in the kids above ground pool to raise the PH. It is in the pool section under the name PD Add.
Next time I go to walmart, I'll calculate the cost per ounce of this added to the cost per ounce of Borax to see if I can save money making my own detergent.

I am confused and may have missed some of the postings,

I thought Washing Soda was Baking Soda

I have been making my own laundry detergent and dishwasher detergent with

Baking Soda, Borax and for the laundry detergent I add a bar of ivory soap shaved.

It has been working well, for me so far, and it is not very expensive.

What is the difference between the Baking Soda and Washing soda?

Carol Anne, baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. It is safe to

consume, we even use it in foods. Washing soda is sodium carbonate,

and is caustic. If you put it in cooking, you will end up sick, even

    in the emergency room.

    <blockquote type="cite" class="cite" cite>What is the

[/quote]Q: What's the difference between baking soda and washing
    soda?

A: We turned to Arm & Hammer for your answer. It says baking soda and
washing soda are two different chemicals. Baking soda is sodium
bi-carbonate. Washing soda is sodium carbonate. Washing soda is stronger,
and is actually caustic. It can be used for cleaning in the kitchen,
    bathroom, and laundry.

Baking soda is a natural laundry booster, Plus it's a fungicide,
preservative, Insecticide, Herbicide, And disinfectant. And baking soda
can be mixed with most other cleaning agents including chlorine bleach.
