Doubly chocolate cookies

1 cup BUTTER, SOFTENED
1 1/2 cup SUGAR
2 each EGGS
2 t VANILLA
2 cup ALL-PURPOSE FLOUR
2/3 cup COCOA POWDER
3/4 t BAKING SODA
1/4 t SALT
2 cup SEMI-SWEET CHOCOLATE CHIPS
1/2 cup CHOPPED NUTS (OPTIONAL)

HEAT OVEN TO 350~F. IN LARGE MIXER BOWL,
BEAT BUTTER, SUGAR, EGGS AND VANILLA UNTIL
LIGHT AND FLUFFY. STIR TOGETHER FLOUR,
COCOA, BAKING SODA AND SALT; ADD TO BUTTER
MIXTURE. STIR IN CHOCOLATE CHIPS AND NUTS,
IF DESIRED. DROP BY ROUNDED TEASPOONFULS
ONTO UNGREASED COOKIE SHEETS. BAKE 8 TO

10 MINUTES OR JUST UNTIL SET. COOL
SLIGHTLY; REMOVE FROM COOKIE SHEET TO
WIRE RACK. COOL COMPLETELY. MAKES ABOUT
4 1/2 DOZEN COOKIES.
