• MYO Sweetened Condensed Milk

    Condensed Milk at home using basic pantry staples, but pay close attention, failure to follow these VERY simple directions will leave you with a cup of runny liquid instead of the perfect consistency you'd get from a can.

    Sometimes people ask, "Why would you make your own?" Well, for starters, if you decide one evening to throw together a dish and you don't happen to have any one hand, it's nice to avoid running to the store, spending money in gas and then standing in line for a single item, which undoubtedly is going to lead to you buying two or three other items that you really didn't need at all.

    Also, before we get going much further let me also point out that our recipe states boiling water, but for the
    sake of clarity let me explain to you what we ALWAYS use in our house. The coffee pot. If I'm going to be cooking anything, I just run a pot of water through the coffee pot and have it on hand in case I need REALLY hot water (or a mug of tea!) while I cook. It comes in very handy and avoids having an extra pot on the stove in the way.

    You'll Need:
    1 cup boiling water
    2 cups sugar
    2 cups non-fat dry milk powder (instant powdered milk)
    6 tablespoons melted Butter (margarine doesn't work very well)

    Measure the ingredients into a mason jar, attach the blender blades directly to the mason jar (full on photo instructions here) and blitz for at least a full minute or so until the mixture is well blended and fairly thick. Remove the blades, apply a cover and refrigerate overnight.

    Dump Hot water into a blender. Add the sugar, dry milk powder and melted margarine. Put the lid on the blender and whirl it around for a full minute. The mix starts out thin, but thickens within an hour.

    Makes (2) cans or about 3 cups. Alternatively, you can halve this recipe for the equivalent of just 1 can of sweetened condensed milk.

    This recipe will work in all your sweetened condensed milk recipes and lasts 7-10 days in the fridge in a covered jar.

      I'm assuming butter would work also. I don't do margarine....
      Also, do you know what the fat grams are for the myo recipe vs a can?

      I'm really excited to try this one out. I use sweetened condensed milk for brigadieros (brazilian chocolate balls), and this will make it guilt-free in the financial realm, if not the dessert realm.

      I can wait to try this out. I usually try to make my own liquid coffee creamer, this would be more cost efficient..

      I've made this recipe a lot but I don't use a blender. It dissolves very easily in a small bowl. I've also made a non-dairy version with powdered coffee creamer since I am lactose intolerant. Just cut down the sugar a bit since coffee creamer is already sweetened. Works great and a fraction of the cost of the ready-made, store bought version.

      I can't wait to try this out! I use Vietnamese coffee and always add sweetened-condensed milk. It gets expensive.

      Do you know whether this recipe would work using splenda? I have a husband with diabetes and it goes crazy at the least little bit of additional sugar that goes above his meager allowance. Any other suggestions regarding sweets would be graciously received.

      can you use this to make caramel? with the store bought stuff you boil the can and it turns into caramel, even though it says on the can not too...lol or some put them in the slow cooker cover with water and cook them in there and you get caramel!

      Will have to try this one so that I can make the MYO Coffee creamer. Made the coffee creamer with store bought Sweetened Condensed Milk and did not like it.

      Awesome sauce! I too am wondering about splenda for my diabetic father.

      I make mine with 4 cups whole milk and 3/4 cup sugar. Boil in medium heat and stir until you see it start to thicken then add pinch baking sodi and boil a few minutes longer. All you need is patience to try this though.
