Ice Charm

  • colored ice cubes made by adding food coloring to water and freezing in ice cube trays
  • 2 glasses about the same size tap water
  • rubbing alcohol
Casting the Spell

Pour one glass three fourths full of water.

Pour one glass three fourths full of rubbing alcohol.

Add a colored ice cube to each.

Watch what happens.

The Science Behind the Spell:

Ice will float in water because the water has a higher density than the ice. (One way to think about density is how thick and heavy it is.)

Rubbing alcohol has a lower density than either the ice or the water. When you place an ice cube in rubbing alcohol it will drop to the bottom. Because the rubbing alcohol is less dense than the ice or the water, the alcohol will float on top of the water.
