There’s nothing more iconic in the Harry Potter series than delicious, coveted chocolate frogs! While these tasty morsels are available for sale, it’s even more fun to make your own!

You’ll need some chocolate, either melting wafers, milk chocolate chips, or even a bar of chocolate broken into pieces, a small amount of vegetable shortening, a chocolate frog candy mold, and some candy eyes (optional, but fun!). If you prefer the frogs have a bumpy texture to them, add a tablespoon or two of rice Krispies to the melted chocolate just prior to filling the molds.

Personally, we prefer to use chocolate chips because they’re considerably less expensive than candy melts. The addition of the shortening creates a smoother, more manageable consistency in the chocolate and also adds a nice sheen, without a streak or swirled appearance.

1 bag (12 ounces) milk chocolate chips, or 1 bar (12 ounces) chocolate, broken into pieces
1 Tbs Solid Vegetable Shortening
grated chocolate
1 plastic mold for chocolate frogs
Small candy eyes

Combine chocolate chips and solid vegetable shortening in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave chocolate on high (100% power) for 30 seconds. Remove and stir. Continue microwaving in 15-second increments until chocolate is almost completely melted. Remove from microwave and grate 1 teaspoon additional chocolate over the melted chocolate; stir until smooth.

Fill the mold with melted chocolate, reserving about 1 tablespoon melted chocolate.

Refrigerate molds until chocolate is firm, about 2 hours. Remove frogs from molds. “Glue” eyes onto the frogs with remaining melted chocolate. Store at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Makes 8-10 frogs.
