I don't know how to make it. But, I have heard something about using vodka.

I have found the cheapest (least expensive) is to find someone going to
Mexico or south Arizona on vacation and get you some. My father brings me
back a 1000ml (33.8 fl. Oz.) each year, It's only $3.00.

Ask around of friends or friends parents, etc.

Homemade Vanilla Bean Extract

Vodka will allow the most vanilla bean flavor to come through. However, you
can also make it with brandy or rum. Experiment to see what you like best.
The recipe is easily halved.

2 or 3 vanilla beans
8 ounces of vodka, rum or brandy

Cut vanilla beans in half crosswise. Put them into a clean, dark, 8-ounce
glass bottle (try an old vanilla extract bottles for this purpose). Using a
funnel, pour alcohol into the bottle. Cap and shake for a minute or two.
Label and date the bottle. Place in a cool place out of direct light.

The extract should be shaken once a day, at least for the first week. You
can use it after a week, but it is best after 3 or 4 weeks. The longer it
sits, the more intense the flavor. While commercial vanilla extract has the
beans removed, it's recommended to leave the beans in the bottle and as you
use the extract, then top it off with more alcohol.

I get all my vanilla from either Mexico or the Caribbean when I go on a cruise.
I get some for both my kids.

We buy ours at ofe of the latin stores in town. It's pure, and very cheap. I
pay less than $3.00 a bottle--and the bottle is more than twice the size I used
to pay more than $6.00 for.....they speak english, too, so it's easy to shop
there....we bought some from Costa Rica when we were there, and the vanilla I
buy locally isn't any different. Now, *coffee* is a whole different story!

I made some vanilla using vanilla beans and vodka. I put it in an empty mayo jar that was clean.

It got darker as time went on.
