Frugal Family Entertainment in the Summertime

It's coming quickly... my kids' school year ends on June 5th. I don't know about you, but my mind is already searching out frugal family fun for this summer.

It's tricky for me because I'm moving to another state at the beginning of the summer, so I will need to do some research in my new place of residence, rather than scoping the local area, but it can be done.

Here are a couple tips for finding frugal family fun:

*Check your parks and recreation department. Here in my town, they offer, for $20 for the whole summer, per child: Monday through Tursday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., arts & crafts, swimming, bowling, zoo trips, playground time, organized sports, and more. A great investment!

*Look for library events. They're free!

*Home Depot offers Saturday workshops for kids, for free!

*Community pools that usually charge an admission will sometimes have free days. Take advantage of these.

*Stay local. You'd be surprised at how much you can discover about your own town, no matter how small it is or how long you've lived there, if you set your mind to it.

*Does your town offer concerts in the park? These are free in my town. Bring a blanket and a drink and maybe a snack, sit back and enjoy the music. It's a great way to expose your children to a variety of music styles. One week it might be jazz, and the next might be classic rock.

*Go for walks together. They're always free, and kids always find something interesting along the way.

*Look for local festivals. Admission is usually free, although food isn't. You might be able to bring your own food, though.

Here's to an upcoming frugal and fun summer.

Great tips to go by. Usually in our local paper they will have a list of local events, so that's also a good source for information.

There is so much to do in my area during the summer. Guess with the harsh cold winters everyone is ready to do anything during the summer. My boys live at the library and the pool for the entire summer.

Life in a small community! We don't have much but when something comes up word of mouth passes it along faster than a prairie fire! last year we got a call to run to the Bethany Community center by 7PM. Oh my! We had a person from Israel traveling through looking at our agricultural systems. Our Ag guy found out he was one of Schindler's Jews! What a wonderful lecture and discussion we had! He was 9 when the war ended and had an amazing story to share with us! Lots of local folks come visit us to canoe, swim or fish in our ponds or watch movies in our home theater. Our add on this year was a pop corn machine. We also go skate once a month or bowl. Pot luck at the park and watch all the kids ball games. We have community talent shows all through the summer too! Free and we clap to choose the winner! Lots of fun!
