My Blood drive experience today

Well I have been a little under the weather the past few weeks. I felt as though I was getting better!! Even this morning I didnt feel stuffed up We had a blood drive at work and I figured I would try. The last three times I tried to give I was in great health and was unable to give because my iron was too low. Well I ate a healthy breakfast and a box of raisins (this helps with Iron) I went out to the bloodmobile and was tested and YES I could give blood - FINALLY - my iron was 13 and all you have to be is a 12 ( I have been testing previously in the 9 range). I enjoy doing this because it makes me feel good about myself - that I can help others well after the questioning I was taken to my seat and prepped to give Ivsat there and felt fine the whole time Smiling to myself THIS IS GOOD!!

Well I was done, it was quick too. They said thanks - gave me a soda, cookies and a shirt (which I usually give to the kids) I was in a good mood - happy with my good deed and ready o get back to work I sat down at my desk and started work but before long (about 5 minutes) I started to feel a little dizzy. I sat back and tried to relax when I started to sweat pretty bad and then the nausea came. I drank some sprite but it didnt help. I thought it would be a good idea to go to the restroom to put some water on my face. It was only 50 feet to the front lobby and the rest room. I was walking pretty fast to the bathroom cause I was feeling like I was going to "have my lunch" again...and that was all I remember. I fainted. I awoke in the lobby with a few people looking over me to make sure I was ok. I rested for awhile (an hour) before I was able to make it back to my cube and work. I took it easy going home as well. I still feel weak but that was a scarey feeling. That has NEVER happened to me before. I am going to the doctor tomorrow to get checked out. I sure dont want to ever happen again. Too scarey!!

Thanks for listening!!!

I know when we used to have a blood drive at my school usually 1/4 people who gave blood ended up fainting. But its going to be greatly appreciated by anyone who needs your blood later on.

I learned that AB Negative is the rarest (at 3% of people have that type) and then AB positive is the next rarest (at 5% of people have that type) ...I have AB positive.....It did make me feel good, just dont know at this time if I want to do it again

The same thing happened to my daughter, (good thing she wasn't driving), she had given blood and on the way home started feeling light headed and faint. DH was only a few blocks from the Red Cross so he went back. They gave her some juice and cookies and kept an eye on her. Let her go after about an hour. She passed out just as she and DH were getting home about 20 min later. Really scared him, he had to carry her in the house. Called the doctor who said to let her rest and make sure she ate something and got juice and bring her in if she didn't feel better the next day. She felt better but hasn't given blood since. (hate to think what could have happened had she been driving.)

I fainted during allergy shot testing half way through. I didn't eat before and that was what happened. It sounds like you did though. Maybe your iron was too low after they took all the blood from you? They usually are supposed to make you wait there for a bit after to make sure your ok.

I used to be in a blood drive club and we had a recovery room for afterwards. I don't give blood anymore after I researched bloodrives and found out that they get your blood for free and end up charging $300 to the person who uses it. Of course, its still necessary to have bloodrives or else no one would have blood in emergencies but they should start paying like they used to. oh well ill get off my soapbox!

glad to hear you both were okay!
