Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had the day off and enjoyed some time with their friends and families! It always seems like New Year is the busiest time of year for me. This year I had intended to take the entire day off but I ended up logging 18 hours working instead, lol. I'm the superstitious type and I firmly believe that whatever you do on the first day of the new year is what you will find yourself doing ALL year long. I can't tell you how freaked out I was 2 New Years Day's ago when my youngest son broke his arm on New Years day! Luckily that bad streak didn't follow us through the year so hopefully the issues I've experienced this year won't either!
Have you ever heard the old saying, Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it? Well I got it, lol, and it just about knocked the wind out of my sails. You see last week I got the bright idea for a New challenge question which was- if you could change the site, what would you change (or some variant of it). I thought I might get a few feature requests, but I felt kind of bombed with posts about business and ads, etc.
I guess when you spend 6 hours or so on a site each day you get so used to how everything works and where it all is that you completely forget that some people are new and have NO idea how find anything! It was an entirely different perspective for me and honestly my first reaction was, You're kidding right? I mean, there are 600,000+ pages, this is pretty easy to find things and then I had to suck it up and realize that if people were taking the time to tell me they couldn't find things, than I really needed to make some changes.
Probably the most frustrating part of this for me was when people let me know that they wished we had "such and such whatever" feature and it's been on the site already since it started. Which means I'm doing a lousy job of explaining the features and making them easy to use. So, while I spent a couple hours bawling and generally feeling sorry for myself with a woe is me and would someone please make me some brownies and a mug of hot tea, I finally yanked up my big girl panties and got busy reconfiguring some options and implementing some "How To's" to make the site easier to navigate.
With any luck, people will start finding the site easier to get around and enjoy a better browsing experience; After all, it does little good to offer such a massive resource to help people, if they cant find what they need!
