SWIRL BALL (KNIT) (CATS OR KIDS FOR HACKY SACK TYPE BALL INSIDE HOUSE)
Free Knitting Pattern: Swirl Ball
It knitted up really fast and the instructions were very clear. Before I
sewed up the seam (It's knit in one piece -- so clever -- so there is only
one seam) I stuffed it with a hunk of fiber-fill stuff and put a wrapped up
piece of batting in the middle that was filled with cat nip.

Thank you so much, this will give my boys something constructive to do when they are on the computer. Will also be great to use with the cub scout groups.

Not a lot in that list that is boy friendly <g> the instructible site is fantastic for all kinds of things HOWEVER as a mom of 4 boys (all ADHD) its NOT somewhere I would let kids roam. If you join (not a biggie) you can download and print out the PDF - this way YOU have control over what they see.
I know that Jake especially would have been trying to make the air pressure guns *uses bike pump, etc.
I am planning on looking for designs for a possibles bag etc (frontiersman etc), and mini buttpacks so the kids could maybe make theirs for hikes etc.
I have a collection of needle books etc, I am planning on having a class for kids on these. *found one that looks like an alligator - may change up the pattern for other animals etc. Reality is BOYS did learn to sew in colonial times, not fancy but functional. Chances are mom used the letters in name for sewing class for boys. Lets face it animals needed sometimes sewn up, so did leather equipement etc. "Dad" did not have his wife do it, he did it.
OTHER GUY CRAFTS THAT ARE LOST/FORGOTTEN:
Sailors knit and crocheted ..
Making nets and knot work was a common pasttime. If you are near a maritime museum there may be some examples of this. In Europe the net grocery bags are fantastic, you can shove just about anything in a bag that scrunches up to a handfull. Here in Maine they were selling net bags (using the ropes used in lobster traps) with hose handles, I actually could pick up a kid with it LOL. Pretty indestructible too as Jake is almost 20 and I've had them for over 15 years.
Wood carving .. uses knives, chisels, bandsaws, etc
I picked up ribs from the local butcher - these are the super flat part not usual ribs for eating .. Native American and frontiersman made knives from them and carved them too. Can scratch design and ink. Makes cool buttons for bags

HSLINKS,
Well aren't you a searcher--wish I had , had all of you when my boys were younger and I was a Den Mother.... So many good ideas here, even for after school programs, and when you have to keep the younger ones busy...![]()

"Joy is not in things. It is in us"
LOL
I am ADHD, which means you have hyper focus for things you like - I have always been an info-junkie ..
HSLINKS stands for Home School LINKS .. I would search for something (and always end up on some other rabbit trail) and make up what I call LINKpages. A whole page of links on specfic subject that have been 'mom checked' for content.
Since ALL the kids are ADHD that means they were interested in lots of stuff and you needed to be able to give them the info NOW, and not wait. Keeping up interest in kids I think helped with teaching, 4 of the 5 are adopted and had various health, mental and learning issues.
My yard was a safe zone for all the kids in the neighborhood, it looked like h-l, cause I had bike parts, forts, ponds etc going. Kids knew if they behaved they could build etc and I would teach them how to use tools correctly. But if they weren't behaving - NO tools. So even the worst behaved kids in school, behaved at my house LOL. Only one time did I ever have to kick a kid out, and he NEVER acted up again. I miss it, Jake (menopasue surprise) is almost 20, so no more flocks of kids in yard.
I crashed 2 computers trying to keep everything on them and run lists from them, till I found yahoo groups and started putting the LINKpages in files.
So if there is something you need I probably have it in files or in my computer (which I am trying to clear)
Did I mention I am completely computer illiterate? So nothing is saved to disk or whatever.
