Hound Dog Delight

To be honest, this one started as a breakfast recipe for my family, and my dogs went so crazy when they smelled it baking in the oven, we reduced some of the initial ingredients to make them their own treat!

I do use a single garlic clove in mine, which is a controversial ingredient, but you can leave it out if you have concerns about it’s safety.

Hound Dog Delight

1 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup grits
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup cheddar cheese, grated
1 clove garlic, chopped (optional)

  1. Preheat oven to 400-degrees.
  2. Bring water to boil and slowly stir in grits and salt. Cook until done. about 3 mins for quick grits and 15 minutes for regular grits.
  3. Remove from heat. Stir in eggs, cheese and garlic. Pour into deep greased baking dish. Bake 30 minutes.
  4. Cool to room temperature first before serving. Refrigerate leftovers.

It is a common practice to serve grits with dinner and even as a side dish at breakfast in the southern parts of the United States. Having a rich, creamy texture and delicious flavor, it’s only natural for dog owners to wonder if their pets would enjoy these treats just as much as they enjoy them themselves.

Is it safe to feed grits to dogs? Grits can be eaten occasionally by dogs, but the calories they provide are largely inert. It is highly recommended that all high fat ingredients, such as butter, be left out when feeding your dog grits.

Are Grits Good For Dogs?

No, as with people, grits are not particularly good for dogs. Their nutritional value is negligible, making them essentially just empty calories. Grits are a form of corn that are used as a filler material in many brands of commercial dog food.

They’re filling, and tasty, but, like any other treat, be sure that you only serve it on occasion, and not as part of a daily or weekly diet plan.

Are Grits Bad for Dogs?

As we previously explained, Grits themselves are not toxic to dogs. and are often included in commercial dog food brands.

Grits can be dangerous for dogs when they are mixed with additional ingredients. Typically, grits are flavored with heaps of salt, pepper, onions, butter, or even bacon grease. Dogs should not consume these ingredients. If you plan to share grits with your dogs, they should be made separately, without the added fat or seasonings.

This hound dog delight recipe is the perfect way for your pup to enjoy grits, without unhealthy amounts of greasy food.

Keep in mind, however, that portions should be very limited and only served on special occasions. As with people, consuming grits on a regular occasion can cause weight management problems and other health issues.

Corn is a common allergen for dogs. When your dog eats corn for the first time, be sure to watch them closely for any reaction or symptoms.

  1. I didn’t realize that feeding garlic to dogs was controversial. I’ve been giving my dogs garlic for years along with brewers yeast to prevent fleas naturally. We’ve never had a flea problem and my dogs are quite healthy.

  2. This was actually a bigger casserole than I had envisioned. It made 9 very healthy-sized portions for my St Bernards. I’ve made it three times now.

I chilled the casserole, cut it into squares and then placed the squares into individual ziploc baggies & froze them. That way, when I need a treat for Bruiser, I can thaw it quickly. It’s his favorite Saturday morning breakfast treat.

  3. We’ve used this delicious hound dog delight recipe as a treat for our dogs for years and they love it; then again, so do the kids! It was my go-to recipe when I first started taking care of underweight strays in our neighborhood.
