I have made this recipe up several times and keep a batch of it in a glass jar in my desk at work on those days when I want something hot to go with a sandwich. It is great for those days when I find myself a little hungry between lunch and dinner.

What does the turmeric do? I don't have any and never use that spice. I have lots of spices on hand just not that one. Could I leave it out or substitute it with another flavor?

Turmeric is routinely added to mustard blends and relishes. It also is used in place of wickedly expensive saffron to provide color and flavor. Turmeric is mildly aromatic and has scents of orange or ginger. It adds a tremendous amount of flavor and I wouldn't leave it out.

Just adding up the measurements, it should be (7) 1/2 c portions.
