It means to stay at home and not go out to eat 5 days a week. It means saving those pennies that you find on the ground. It means taking advantage of all the free things to do in your neighborhoods. Or less expensive ways to help cut costs all around. We have been going to the 2.00 movie houses instead of the more expensive ones. What a great outing.
My hubby cant get enough of craigslist!! I just sold a projector (we hadnt used in over a year!!) on there last week - enough to pay off a couple bills!! Freecycle is great too!!!

Frugal living does not just mean saving money to me. Frugal also means not falling into the culture of consumerism that so many people enjoy. Do I really need to buy something just because it was advertised on TV or because "everyone else" has it? I like to cook and bake things from scratch. I never buy things in a mix or stuff like Cool Whip. This does save money but it also fits in with what I believe in general. When I can get something from a thrift store or yard sale that saves money but it also keeps things out of the landfill. When I buy something new there is a cost to the planet from the manufacturing process so I think of buying something used as "green".

I am an anti-consumerism person as well. Buying items just for the sake of "buying" has gotten this country in a miserable shape. My mom always taught me to rail against the system that teaches us to spend everything and make nothing. She also taught me how to make items, sewing and foodwise, that I would not have to buy.
My family and I also love to sit around and make fun of the commercials we see on tv! We often pick apart their message. (IF you won't buy their products, you and your family will be a miserable, unhealthy, and broke.) We have also noticed the huge increase in pharmaceutical commercials. "Need to sleep...Take this pill...Need lovin'...take this pill...heartburn...take this pill..." IT is really sad that everyone in the market wants to drain the consumers dry of their money.

Neither a borrower nor a lender be.
I should have listened to Shakespeare!
I agree totally! It is the awareness of our finances, living within our means, and enjoying the fruits of our labor. We all work very hard for our money...and it is a fine art in the 'stretching' of the dollars. I find it almost a game or a sport...I compete with myself...trying to 'out-do' myself each week. I love the thrill/challenge of finding the deals...seeing how far I can make our money go (it is a necessity...especially during these economic times...but why not make it fun in the process).

We have a store here called "Plato's closet" and my daughters have taken their cloths there and exchanged. This is a great way to save!!
